Wiper Switch Assembly

I went to turn on my wipers tonight and the switch completely fell apart. Looks like the housing wasnt staked well enough and all the pieces fell out the back. The parts in the picture are what I was able to find rolling around on the floor of the cab (the connector was still attached to the harness). Problem is, I have no idea how to get it back together and not even sure if I have all the parts or not. I know most will say "just buy a new switch" but this switch is less than a year old and I figured I might as well try to repair this one before I spend money on a part I already bought. Buying the same part twice is never fun. Im starting to see the chinese "quality" in several of the parts that LMC sells.

Well, since I had a little free time this morning and a donor washer switch with bent spade terminals and a broken knob shaft, I decided to disect it. It’s amazing how this thing is constructed inside. Here is a sequence of how it is put together.

The first picture shows all of the parts in order. The little brass contact inside the switch is actually removable. As you can see in the picture the contact for the washer pump circuit is pretty corroded on this one. To get it apart I just drove a small screwdriver between the metal housing and plastic/bakelite switch plate where the crimps are and gently pried the crimped areas out. I only had to do three of the four….

The two switch ears (for lack of a better name) are different sizes and will only fit into the plastic piece one way when it is assembled. (pictures two and three)

Here is a picture with the fiber washer in place and the small tapered spring sitting on top of it. The large spring slides over the boss on the black plastic piece and this then sits on top of the brass contact plate/fiber washer/small spring. Note that the two brass tangs are different sizes and will only fit into the slots in the black plastic piece one way.

The complete contact assembly together, with the small spring inside.

This is where it gets a little hairy assembling it. The small tapered spring is loose inside the assembly and when it is put back together the small brass pin has to fit inside the small end of the tapered spring. I found that you can put the small end of the spring over the brass pin, then fit the contact assembly over that.

If you like to tinker and fix stuff like I do this is a fun project. If you don’t have time or don’t like this type of project you will probably want to buy one.

Re: Wiper Switch Assembly

Lockdoc for the win! That's what I call above and beyond what I was looking for. You may have very well posted the first images of how the inside of that switch looks. I looked for an hour to try to find anyone who had opened one up and didn't have any luck. Appears that I am missing the larger spring and the small black plastic piece with two different size openings. I'll look around inside the truck again and see if I can find any rogue pieces. I have a feeling I'll be pulling my wallet out again very soon and will be the owner of a new wiper switch.
