Captive nuts

Working on bolting up doors on My 1957 stepside and most of the captive nuts are gone, some are easy to add nut and washer and to back up with wrench, some are not. thought it would be a whole lot easier if they were replaced.

That is totally awesome. I think the missing or damage captive nut thing is one of those we all fight.

The aggravation of trying to line up the doors is bad enough !!
Usually working as a one man show and trying to get to the back up wrench, and not a great supply to pick from online. And if you do find them the shipping is crazy to get them to the house.
The captive is a little different in hinge part that is furthest back that exits under the fender,still working on that one.

Had a similar issue with the ones installed on my aftermarket replacement lower door pillars, but actually had the "cages" welds not hold - after welded in, of course. I replaced with regular washers and nuts and could reach all with wrenches, except the bottom one. I drilled a 1" hole in the front so I could get a socket in to tighten the nut, then installed a rubber cap to fill the hole.

Hello guys. This goes back to early 2008. At that time my welding skills were not that good but I needed to get the doors back on my truck to make it drivable. I figured out a way to make it a no-weld needed fix. I did tack weld nuts on the back side but those could be left off. Just as a side note my welding skills have improved since then.

Got the captive nut finished for the back of hinge that exits under fender.
Crude but effective. Hinges bolted up, so far so good.

Once door was tight and stayed in adjustment was able to work on door to fender gap. A while back the fender end panel, door bottom and skin , and rocker panel were replaced. As they were all bolted up together all the gaps were fugly. Added wire edge to fender, lowered end of rocker, cleaned up door edge... starting to finally come together.
