Shell Rotella T4 ZDDP content
Can someone clarify the spec sheet that I'm reading for Shell Rotella T4? According to the spec sheet the ZDDP concentration is 1 - 2.4%, which would be a minimum of 10,000ppm ZDDP. That can't be correct, right? That just seems way too high.
Am I reading the spec sheet wrong? http://www.kellerheartt.com/v/vspfil...s_01290379.PDF |

Re: Shell Rotella T4 ZDDP content
conversion is correct - 1% = 10,000 ppm. I'm thinking 0.1% (or 1,000 ppm) is closer to what we want. The new Delo 15w-40LE is at 0.13%

Ah, zinc......Lots of opinions. Word is you want to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000-1400 ppm (worth looking up). Too much zinc is bad. Other opinions are zinc isn't as important as what's "rumored", which is an opinion I've adopted.

Re: Shell Rotella T4 ZDDP content
Ok, if that 1% is accurate then I may return the jugs of T4 I bought. I didn't realize it was different from the original Rotella T, and that 10,000ppm just seems way too high to run in an old motor.
Edit: Now I'm really confused. Chris Guerrero at Shell says it has 1200ppm. Maybe the rating on the spec sheet is just for hazard reasons and not necessarily the actual content? I think I'm just going to use it and skip the zinc additive. A lot of guys aren't worrying about the zinc content with their older tappet motors without issues. I think maybe that sheet is a typo & it should read .1-.24%? Shell Rotella will be very close to Delo, I've run them both (not familiar with the T4 though) I'd use it but I'd skip the adititive (just what you said!)

Rotella T is discontinued and now there is T4 T5 and T6. T4 is conventional, and T5/6 is either blend or full synthetic. |
