How much POR-15 for Mar-K bed wood?
I ordered a bed wood kit from Mar K and I'm giving it their POR-15 and black paint treatment. Can anyone who has done this confirm how much POR-15 I need to complete it? Short Fleetside 65 GMC.
Second question: do you paint rails with same combo? Thanks

Re: How much POR-15 for Mar-K bed wood?
Bump. Was hoping to order some in the next hour or two so it arrives on Thursday along w/ my bed wood. But if no one knows, I will just drive up and buy a couple of quarts and go from there. Would just rather get the right quantity the first time so I'm not rushing in between coats.

Quote:
You should be able to get it covered with 2 quarts of POR-15. I painted my bed strips with the KBS Coatings too, and the cross rails too. I top coated my bed strips with rattle can Rustoleum low gloss black high temp engine paint. Wait until the POR-15 is almost completely dry and then add the spray can top coat. For the bed wood, just let the POR-15 dry completely.

Thanks Lugnutz65, based on your advice I ended up picking up 2 quarts locally. Next I need to go get the top coat paint.

Re: How much POR-15 for Mar-K bed wood?
For future reference if anyone digs up this thread, 1 quart of POR-15 lasted me about 1.75 coats on my short bed fleetside. The Mar-K website calls for 3 coats. I'm not sure if I'm going to do 3. I probably should since this truck is going to live outdoors.

Re: How much POR-15 for Mar-K bed wood?
So far I have completed 3 coats, on both top and bottom. I have used just shy of 1.5 qts of POR-15.

Re: How much POR-15 for Mar-K bed wood?
A bit off topic from the initial post, but I'm kind of disappointed. I assumed the Mar-K kit, being sold as "pre-drilled", would have all the holes drilled. It only came w/ the frame mounting holes drilled, and I had to drill the remaining holes along the side boards and wheel well myself. I somehow spaced on this fact and did 3 coats of POR-15 before drilling, so now I'm doing 3 more coats of POR-15 just for the drill holes (and splintered areas!).
I've heard top coat adhesion may be an issue, so hopefully sanding all the boards lightly before starting my top coat layers will help with adhesion.
