Help with van tilt please
Hey guys I have a van tilt that is making me pull my hair out. The cancel cam keeps touching the turn lever screw when i tighten down the grant adapter. And now i have developed a clunking when i barley try and turn it (confirmed in the column) seems like its high near the tilt portion. All seems tigjt just almost like something is bindind when you go to turn it.
Any ideas? Pics of internals? Sucks i may have to spring for an ididit....cant afford it now...

Re: Help with van tilt please
I've been trained by a few vehicles that popped one of 2 little springs that would make the turn signal cancel at the slightest turn.
Beyond that, is the turn lever screw too long? Seems the wheel adaptor is more of an issue or the junk under it (can be a puzzle) than the column. My Grant liked to lock the horn buttons down and fain inspections... I dumped it for a less pretty GM setup. |

You do have the spring under the turn signal cam? And it's the right cam for a tilt column, post some pictures of those parts and a pic of the adapter installed and the column turn signal area without the adapter

Re: Help with van tilt please
More details...
It has a brand new turn signal switch. The strange thing is that the original cam sets so deep into the column. It was touching on the original turnsignal switch screw too. I am using a grant 3 bolt adaptor and then it has the 5 bolt foreversharp adaptor spacer, and foreversharp wheel. I tried shimming the cam with a washer under it. It fixed the horn problem but i wonder if tightning the whell pulled something becaus i did not have the clunking before. I removed rhe wheel and tention and still have the clunk. Also this was an column shift but i dont use that portion and the levers are removed. Maybe something with that is binding? I wish i knew what it looked like in there with out tearing it all down. I do know that this cancel cam is different than the typical gm ones you see at the parts store. It is black and heavy made. Looking from the bottom it is deeper inside. And the top side where the wheel mates to is pretty much flat. Also ther is no grove or slot on the horn mechanism where the wire goes...its just a smooth cylinder. Honesty the clunking is what is bothering me the most....

Re: Help with van tilt please
Turn signal cam sound right by your description. Is there a spring over the center shaft which exerts pressure on the turn signal cam pushing it into the steering wheel adapter? If the spring is missing the cam will hit on the turn signal switch and cause your binding

Re: Help with van tilt please
No spring there, but the binding is felt even with the wheel and cam off just turning the shaft by hand. I disconnected the intermediate so i know its in the column. Im not sure how the guts work at rhe tilt....id does it in all positions tho. Surly putting pressure on the top bearing with the 1/16 spacer didnt damage something. 😒

Re: Help with van tilt please
Also it seems that with the adaptor fulluy seated there is no space left for the cam to come up off of the turnsignal mechanism.....bul like i said it was like that before the wheel swap....maybe someone jacked it before me....

Re: Help with van tilt please
The tool can be found on ebay some people have even made a tool, search for that here and on google.
I have removed dozens of them by tapping it off with a chisel or unworn flat blade screwdriver, there is a relief slot to start at. I can post a pic of the slot location if you can't find it. I only recently bought the cover puller. |
