Heater core replacement

I'm replacing the core in my 65 heater. Its the standard heater with the core in the engine compartment. Is there some kind of seal between the core and the housing? Got the seal kit from LMC and there are a whole lot of foam gaskets that don't appear to be for my heater, but nothing that would seal the core. Thanks for any help, Tom

Thanks Dave. I found that and a bunch more threads, but none mention a core seal. Anybody else have any ideas?

Re: Heater core replacement

When replacing mine a few years ago, I don't recall foam or a gasket inside the box. I'm guessing the truck doesn't have one to see what's already in there. In case you're not aware, there's a good chance the inlet and outlet tubes will not align correctly with the outside bracket. I made my own to remedy the issue. Just curious, is the replacement core copper or aluminum?

I just replaced the heater core in my 66 with a standard heater and the only gasket that was usable was between the housing and the cab. Mine never had a gasket for the core itself. The one issue that I came across was the first heater core was only 2" thick even though their specifications showed it should be 2 1/2" thick. Finally found a correct one at O'Reilly's (94788) that was the correct size and it fit perfect.

Re: Heater core replacement

Thanks to all that responded. I'm putting together a good heater assembly from parts from several trucks and all have been messed with in the past, so hard to tell what's original. Fortunately I had a good original Harrison core so that fits good. I was worried about dissimilar metals with the copper/brass against the aluminum housing ( I'm an electrician and we worry about that kind of thing in my world), I made a foam gasket from some of the scrap that came with the LMC kit, Figure it can't hurt.
BTW if anybody out there is taking apart a fresh air heater, don't forget to clean and paint the rain shield in the cowl, as you can only get it out by removing the heater, and most are pretty crusty after 50 years
Thanks Tom
