Starter issues on my 70 C10

I'm having issues with my truck again. I have a sbc350 with a T400 transmission automatic. Everything is new, motor, tranny, everything. My starter is not spinning the flexplate now. It will start once or twice then just spins and makes a winding noise. Flexplate is new and so is the started. I shimmed it and it started but then did the same thing again. Could my flexplate be bent? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks fellas

It may not be throwing the gear out on the starter. Have you directly jumped the starter to see?

To operate the starter off of the vehicle to check operation:

1. Remove the starter from the vehicle.
2. Secure the starter in a vice or similar to prevent it from moving.
3. Using jumper cables, connect one end to the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of a good battery.
4. Connect the other end of the jumper cables negative (-) to the starter case where it bolts to the engine, and connect the positive (+) clamp to the nut where the battery cable connects.
5. Using a screwdriver (or equivalent tool), jump between the terminal where the small starter wire connects and the jumper cable positive (+) clamp.
6. Check that starter gear comes all the way out and that starter rotates.

You have a bad starter drive on the end of the starter. The drive is a one way clutch. It is not holding all the time or releasing too soon.

Try lubing the bendix. It sounds like it is dry.

Sorta sounds like a solinoid issue. Lube the bendix like LocDoc says first

May still not be shimmed enough. I had the advantage of having my engine on a stand when I installed a new starter. It needed several washers before it would clear the flexplate teeth properly every time.
