HELP! tuned up truck andkey wont turn engine off
i put a new distributor cap, rotor, wires, and bosch platinum 4 tip plugs. and also inline fuel filter and it fired right up. runs 10x better now hands down. i went to turn it off and turned the key off pulled it out and the truck was still running. i pulled negative battery then positive and it kept running meaning alternator was keeping it alive. i finally pulled the wire off of the hei and the truck turned off. i have been doing this all day now and cant figure out why the truck wont turn off. the truck is alot faster now. i pushed it to 60 on a backroad with ease. the hei was on the truck before i bought it.i told the guy at oreilly and he guessed and looked for electronic ignition parts for an 85 chevy truck. on the hei the power source goes into 1 of 2 slots on the side. it wont go into the left sight but it go into the right. anybody please help me. could the thing where you stick the key into have gone bad ( eh i forget the name now)? HELP!

sounds to me like your ignition switch is sticking and it just happened to go bad after you did the tune up

Is your HEI power wire hooked up to ignition unfused? Or is it hooked up somewhere that has power even when the ignition is turned off? WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Try what jef said, see if your wipers still work with the key in the off postion. Also try the turn signals. Also, check to make sure your HEI wire isn't hooked to a constant hot power source, like Wes said.

okay. i went to take the lock cylinder out of the old ignition switch and it wouldnt come out so i bought a new lock cylinder from oreilly. but i think it is for a car so i had to shave the sides on the front to get the bezel to go over it. before i shaved it and completely installed it i started the truck and turned it off using the key. when i finished the whole deal i started the truck and the key would not turn it off. what the hell is going on? i cracked the connector that goes onto the hei providing it with power from turning off the truck that way. i really need to figure this out. at first the key turned it off but then after i installed it it wouldnt turn it off.
i went to a swapmeet today at delmar. didnt get there till 3 bc of this whole mess. only like 5-6 people left their by the time i got there. i got some good deals bc people wanted to move stuff. i got 2 exhaust manifolds in real good condition for 69-72 chevy trucks the guy told me. he wanted 60 i got the 2 for 40. 20 bucks a piece for exh.man. is real good in the condition these are in. i got 2 orange sidemarkers in decent condition for a buck. i also got a chrome flywheel cover for 20.

hmmm...perhaps one of the wires going into the ign switch is shot, and only getting connection when you have it in a certain position? (IE: switch not installed in the bezel) I'm not sure what else could be causing it....

I'd check the wiring at the cap for the HEI like someone else suggested. While you make sure it's wired right also make sure that none of the connectors are shorting against each other.
Edit for: If I remember right some HEI caps are labeled something like C-, GRD and C+. The C+ should be from the ignition switch.

i cannot plug the power into the other slot on the hei. it will just not go. it is completely possible the wire is only making contact at a certain angle and messing with all the wires like did made it loose the connection

IF YOU ARE STRAPPED AND HAVE TO USE THE TRUCK EVERY DAY LIKE I DO, YOU CAN PUT A TOGGLE SWITCH IN LINE ON YOUR HOT TO YOUR HEI. I KNOW THIS ISN'T FIXING THE PROBLEM, BUT IT WILL REMEDY IT UNTIL YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT. IT SURE BEATS THE HELL OUT OF POPPING THE HOOD AND YANKING THE HOT WIRE OFF THE HEI EVERY TIME YOU SHUT THE MOTOR OFF.
