I found a take off tailgate, but....

...it managed to get backed into something before the original owner took it off.

Oh well, I bought it anyway. It's still nicer than the one I have.

Here's some pics

I thought this sticker was cool, and I've never seen one with the seam sealer still on the bottom.

I think a good body guy could get that out with no problem. Paint would have to be touched up but not a big deal....

X2 on LocDoc. That will be a simple fix. It's good that the bottom wasn't compromised. Some spot weld pulls and a little heat, and you're in business.

Re: I found a take off tailgate, but....

I talked to my buddy who is a body man, he said we can coax it out with the stud gun and some simultaneous hammer work. He's pretty good, so I'm optimistic.

I'm not worried about the paint, I'm planning on a medium non-metallic blue.

I got it pretty cheap, the folks I bought it from were just trying to get it out of their way. I think it had been in storage for a very long time, it was fairly dirty when I looked at it.

What are the physical differences between a take off tailgate and the non-takeoff? How can you tell by looking?

Re: I found a take off tailgate, but....

A take off is a gate just simply taken off very early in the trucks life. I had a 71 c20 that had a camper almost from day one and the gate was simply taken off and kept almost prestine all of those years.

The tailgate for my '70 was an early takeoff. Unfortunately it was stored in the rafters of a shed and the Raccoons used it for a bathroom. It stained it pretty bad on the front side. This truck had a large slide in camper on it when I got it. The lack of dings, dents, rust, and wear on the trunion sockets on the ends are usually good indicators of an early takeoff gate

Re: I found a take off tailgate, but....

Wow! $20, I didn't get mine that cheap.
I'm not surprised it went fast.
I went to get this one on Sunday night at 7, didn't really know if it was good or not. But I figured it might be worth it, it's hard to find one that isn't beat up across the top. This one is perfect on the top edge.

That sticker is from the Mayflower moving company. They put one on every item they move in their truck and put the number in their manifest. I would say that sticker is from the mid seventies, as I have the exact same stickers on my stuff that was moved from Illinois to Maryland back in 1975.

Yeah, I thought the sticker was pretty damn cool. I left it alone for now, it survived this long.

Re: I found a take off tailgate, but....

After an hour, and about 20 studs from the stud gun it's starting to look a lot better.

My buddy the body man is showing me the ropes on dent removal. Having a stud gun is the way to go.
