Factory red oxide locations
Question ? What body exterior panels had red oxide primer from factory? I know the cab and doors did but any others?

Re: Factory red oxide locations
I stand corrected. I had my reservations on that, been a long time since I've had a 69/70. I'm not sure about '70 now. Pretty sure overall the same primer, though, whichever color. I don't remember buying any GM replacements in any year that weren't black. But let's see what others say.

Re: Factory red oxide locations
My bed, fenders and cowl are black. But I have some red on the hood and that's where I'm not sure.

Re: Factory red oxide locations
This is one of those things that could have varied by build plant and available paint supplies. Meaning that GM wasn't going to stop production because the prefered primer wasn't available.

Re: Factory red oxide locations
I have a '68 with red oxide cab/doors and black everywhere else. I wonder why they used two different primers to begin with?

Re: Factory red oxide locations
Please correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding is that parts were supplied to assembly plants from many different vendors. Fenders and hoods needed no welding so they arrived primed and ready for painting. Cabs and boxes were assembled from pieces shipped to the plant and then had to be primed after they were welded together. So the fenders may have been manufactured and primed in Michigan weeks before the cab was assembled in California.

Re: Factory red oxide locations
I think that is the truth. I have a '73 Z-28 built at Norwood Ohio plant. Norwood Camaros were dipped in red primer. Z-28's from the Van Nuys California plant, I believe, were black primer.
