Re: Outside door handle replacement

you'll, have to remove the door panel..there's 2 screws that hold the actual handle to the door..then there's the actuator rod that has a clip on it ..youll have to pop that off with a screwdriver or small pick..it ain't no fun job

Re: Outside door handle replacement

If you are putting aftermarket handles on please inspect the back of the black push button. Some of them have extra material and it keeps the rod in the up position to much and will not allow the lock to unlock. Took me 2 days to figure this out! I had to file down the new one to make them work.

Re: Outside door handle replacement

In the first pic you can see the door handle assembly off the truck. The arrows indicate where the two bolts are that have to be removed after the door panel is off. But the tricky part is the rod and where it attaches to the latch mechanism. Before you can remove the handle you need to detach this rod from the latch mechanism. In the second pic, the red arrow indicates where it attaches and the clip that locks it in place. Use a pic or small screwdriver to pull the clip down like it is in the picture, it doesn't have to be removed, then you can pull the rod out of the latch and remove the door handle.

Anytime you need to replace or repair something on these trucks, check out Youtube. Just do a search for 73-87 Chevy truck & the part your wanting to replace. This came in handy for me, I was able to do a lot of my own repairs when I knew nothing about these trucks when I first got mine.

Been there, done that. Like he says, "it aint no fun job". That clip liked to have made me let loose some bad words. Well, actually it did.
