Another C10 bites the dust...
First of all, I wish I could post pics on here, but I'm not on the photo bucket bandwagon. Maybe someone can turn me on to a diff image hosting site so I can share the pics.
So, after I retired from 25 years in the USAF my son and I decided to build an 84 C10. We built the truck in about 6 months just in time for his 16th birthday this last May. I bought the truck with no drivetrain with made it easier for the LS swap. My older brother painted the truck "pepsi can" blue for him and another friend hooked up the interior. Chris is interested in SCCA stuff so we put wilwood brakes on the front and rear, and also lowered the truck with big sway bars. Was a really pretty truck....had AC, PW,PL, tilt, cruise...you name it. So we go to LS Fest in Bowling Green, KY, last week and he was really starting to get good on the auto-x courses. Well he decided to go out on the road course at NCM and thats when he wrote a check that his skill level couldn't cash...he went off course and hit the retaining wall. Chris is OK, thank God, but "Dory" as we named her...is not. She has a bent frame and only one straight panel on the truck. He was upset, as can be expected...but I was not. I am happy he tested the limits of his truck and skills in a controlled environment, not on the street. So we are looking for another square body to swap over all the goodies. But this time he wants a 6-speed and more rear weight bias...which will be hard with these trucks. I always enjoy reading the threads on this forum and there is a wealth of knowledge here that I utilize daily, and I thank each of you for that. With all that being said, hug your kiddos whenever and as often as you can, and realize that we can replace sheetmetal, but we can't replace them. Bubba |

Re: Another C10 bites the dust...
I bet mom doesn't have as good of an attitude as you about your boy smashing up the truck as you do. Glad he is ok and also glad you two are moving forward and building another truck. I don't know if I want to tell you how to post pics because you will post sad pics of the smashed up truck.
Pics can be posted directly to the site from your computer or phone. Check out this thread, it is all covered. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=627506

Re: Another C10 bites the dust...
Glad he's OK and probably gained some good experience. Also glad that you guys are getting right back on the horse so to speak. How about a build thread? Would be interesting seeing you guys move the salvageable parts across, etc. And then we're not just left with the saddening shots above. You guys built a very nice truck.

Bubba, you are right testing skills in a controlled environment is the way to go. Safety is paramount.

Re: Another C10 bites the dust...
Thanks for the words folks. Im aggressively looking for a doner truck here in the south east. Got a few I'm chasing down. Still haven't decided on whether I want to try and find a nice truck and then swap, or find a neglected one and build it from there...
Bought a 6.2 today and will team that up with the t6060. Also sold the drivetrain out of the truck today. So I'm back to "even." I will have to get another wiring harness for the motor, but that's part of it. Malo, front rims are 17x8 with 245/45's, rears are 17x11 with 285/40's. They are 26 inches tall, if I had to do it all over again, id get a taller tire. Bubba |

Re: Another C10 bites the dust...
Bubba I'm sorry to hear the young man's first truck was torn up so soon. It sure looked nice. As you said it's way better to happen there and not on our highways. Still a tough lesson to learn though.
I'll bet there are some things you have thought of to add or do different on the next one too. That weight bias could be hard. I'd imagine moving the battery and gas tank to the rear will move the most weight but you probably already know that. Good luck in your search.

Re: Another C10 bites the dust...
Sweet, thats the right color man. And it sure does "pop" when its near other colors. We will most likely go back with a shade of blue similar to what we had, but now will prolly put flake in it.
Boog, you are correct in that there are a lot of things that I will do different...esp in regards to the LS swap. I plan to chronicle it in a build thread over in that section. Bought a frame this last weekend. Its a 77 frame with a 12 bolt...150 bux and I drug it on the trailer. Ordered the ride tech 4 link, the wiring harness (from swap specialties and perf--them guys are good) for the LS3/T6060 and some other misc stuff. Truck will be built for auto-x and having fun. Sill haven't named the truck, my son was thinking "Bonnie???" I dunno...hard to name something when you have just a bare frame in front of you.... |

Hey Bubba!
Sorry to hear about the loss of the truck but the gaining of a valuable lesson, you've got a great attitude. Can't wait to see what you build next, I really liked your build and appreciated you giving me the details in chat. Keep that great momentum moving with the new project! Rob |
