402/TH400 shift linkage with headers

I have searched and cannot find a direct solution for this issue: I have a big block with Hedman Chevelle headers and a TH400. The stock shift linkage would not work so I modified the trans bracket to be able to eliminate the bracket that runs across to the frame pivot bracket. The stock linkage rod from the column is now at the wrong angle and causes the shift lever to bind and it will not move through the entire gear selector range when I tighten the rod clamp on the column. With the column clamp loose I can move the trans bracket through the entire range. The column I have is an early one that has detents on the lower arm that the rod attaches to. I can post pics if needed. My question is will the Lokar or a similar kit work with this set up? I measured from the column attaching point to the trans linkage bracket attaching point and its 24”. I know Lokar makes a 21” and a 26” rod. If anyone with this same set up has a solution please post a solution or a link to a thread with a solution.

I have the same combo and I run headman truck headers with no fit menu issues. You could also use the lokar aca-1804 shift cable kit. I have used these on other trucks and they work great.

I almost wish I would have just bought truck headers. I want to tuck the exhaust between the frame rails though. I have a tubular trans xmember so hopefully this will be the only issue.

Another option would be to use shorty headers and have a custom exhaust made. Question is how much do you want to spend. The cable kit allows the use of stock column while the flexibility of routing the cable where you need to to clear headers and other components. It is a reasonable option.

Headers are installed and exhaust is already purchased and non-returnable. I have decided after some research that I am going to build my own linkage with spherical rod ends. That should allow the rod to move independently at each end to eliminate the binding. Thanks for your suggestions.

I just bought a lokar kit for my LS swap with a 6L90E.

I moved my engine forward a few inches, and the rod was still too short. I ended up bending the rod and cutting my original rod and welding them together.

A word of warning though. You need adjustment somewhere. It can be on the column end or the transmission end, but your detents may not line up without it. This is why I bought the lokar kit. It came with the spherical bearings and the adjustable arm for the transmission.

I modified the original bracket at the transmission selector shaft and bolted a second bracket to it that has some adjustment built into it.

I bought a couple rod ends and a universal aluminum linkage rod from Speedway Motors and it works great. The Lokar kits are $60 and up, I have $30 in mine. I had to cut the original bracket and weld two pieces together but it works, doesn't bind, and I have full range of motion through all gear positions.
