Arrow Where can I find a 366 or 427 tall deck engine?

Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a tall deck engine. Wanting to swap it into my C/10. I know, not the most reasonable move... But I need something that will run forever, and the 250 in it currently is just giving me hell and taking all my money.

I'm in Central Kansas, about an hour north of Wichita.

My budget is tight, I'm a broke college kid, trying to pay rent and tuition. I need something running, or ready to run, for $300 or less.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance!

just a fyi there is a LOT of stuff that makes the 250 to bbc swap a NOT bolt in ready swap .

you would be better off finding a sbc and swaping that first .

tall deck swap to c10-30 parts list at quick glance

frame side engine mounts and engine side engine mounts
coil springs for the front end for bbc spec
oil pan
flex plate or flywheel
need all tall deck drive brackets for alt and other stuff .
cooling system hose hook up fab work
exhaust . c-60 style manifolds dont work on little frames design .

i am sure there is more .

Valid points. I just kinda despise small blocks. Everyone and their grandma has something with a small block in it. Same with LS engines. You know how many times I've heard the phrase "LS swapped"? Way too many lol. That's exactly why I'm in the process of building a rat rod with a 500 cubic inch Cadillac engine in front of it.

I got the 250 running decent again, for now... Points were barely opening. Fixed them, and went ahead and ordered an HEI setup for it. If it ever gives me grief after the HEI swap, I'm pulling it.

i know a guy who got burned bad on a car deal . . .

long story short he has a 427 tall deck dump truck engine in a 72 chevelle .

lets just say it cruises but has no real use in a light vehicle for the power band and torque curve it has stock .

Not to sound harsh, but a 250 six is probably the most reliable simple to work on engine you are likely to encounter. The tall deck motors have some quirks that make certain parts hard to get and the stock heads are horrible from a performance standpoint. not to mention that big block parts were 2-3 times as expensive as small even when they were currently made motors. I am not saying it is a bad choice......just saying that it is counter to your stated goals.

Re: Where can I find a 366 or 427 tall deck engine?

Why does it have to be a Tall Deck? The price on the only one of the two (427cid) that matters has been (over)inflated, due to folks that swear by their supposed strength and ability to build cubic inches, neither of which are in your requirements list. A running, "large oval port" 454cid out of a '70's-80's Dually ($300-500) would serve you better, better packaging, better breathing, and only a cam swap away from fun. Tall Deck heads are all done breathing at ~4500RPM, pistons have four (that's 4!) piston rings, negatives>positives. Yuck.
