this would be a good candidate for a chemical dip for removing the rust... don't know where you live, but I had a rusty hood chemically dipped and it came out like a freshly stamped factory unit...

how the heck did that thing get so rusty!!
A sand blaster can be bought for less then $150 bucks and a bag of sand is less then 10 bucks, I bought one, and it was one of the best investments I have ever made

I think "teeitup" was selling ac dashs for $30.
I don't think that one is worth putting money into because used good ones are so cheap.

Hi !!! If anyone in the Indiana area needs sandblasting done , I charge $60.00 an hour , and we can blast a lot of metal in an hours time . Had a lady get upset with me cause I told her 60 ...to blast her fireplace stuff , after 3 days of wire brushing she brought me the one piece she was working on , had it new looking in 10 mins ....she bout croked . I like the chemical dip method too ....place in Indy called RediStrip , they do great work . Guess, thats my 2 cents worth .... ty ... jyd

You don't have your location listed, but if you call around to the chrome plating shops in your area, they may be able to point you in the direction of a chemical stripping business in your area...
the hood I had done was covered with surface rust inside and out, just like your dash, but it looked like stainless steel after the stripping process... it's important to get etch or sealer primer on it right away to prevent flash rusting. As I recall it was $35 to dip a 72 truck hood...

I bought a pressure blaster from harbour freight for $125 and the black beauty sand is only $5 a100lb bag. it really works good, even on sheet metal. I took my frame to a place to be done just because of all the under coating still on it.

First question, WHERE DO YOU LIVE? You ask where to get it done, but haven't told anyone where you are.
Second question, do you have room to blast it yourself? Home blasting is very messy. I built a small cabinet so I don't have to clean up after blasting. Something that big I would have someone else do. Look in the phone book, there are bound to be some blasters in your area. I have a place here that will dip parts cheap. They gave me a price of $30 to remove the old powder coating and dip my 12 bolt rear end. It had water inside and I wanted it completely clean. To do something like that you are looking at about $25-35. They use a chemical method of stripping. Blasters in my area are pretty reasonable too. I had all the cross sills blasted and powder coated for $80 at my local blaster. Call around, you'll find someone. |
