Grandpa's Gentle Men's Chevy

Brought home Grandpa's 1970 GMC ranch truck and thought it would be a good first post. It's a bit rough but pretty solid. I am planning to swap the 292 with a strong running 350 I have till I can rebuild the straight six, redo the interior and change the 16" rims for some 15" that I am getting ready with some new skinny whitewall tires. Cheers

Re: Grandpa's Gentle Men's Chevy

You'll be going to a whole lot of work to swap in a V8 if you intend to go back to the 292. You might just wish you hadn't. I would look long and hard for a 292 if that's your plan.

Re: Grandpa's Gentle Men's Chevy

My Grandpa actually taught me to drive in this truck sitting on a pillow looking between the steering wheel and the dash. We drove many a mile all the while listening to amazing stories, looking at the cows and checking water. "Keep her under 35 Son." Amazing that was 40 years ago. Steering is a bit loose due to all the two lane rutted roads and she's got some cancer from the mud and a bullet hole in the passenger side door from a Hired Helper who claimed someone was was stealing her in the night . As for the swap, I'm thinking I can get the v8 in there quicker than I can rebuild the 292 as I am planning on doing all the work on both set ups myself.

Re: Grandpa's Gentle Men's Chevy

Love the truck and welcome. Look at the motor mount locations an the 292 and the V8, you'll begin to see the challenge for just a temporary swap.

Re: Grandpa's Gentle Men's Chevy

Congrats, neat truck and great to have a truck that belonged to your grandfather. My grandfather had a GMC short wide bed, black with red interior, 6 cyl, 3 OTT, late 60's model (I can't remember the exact year). He traded it in on a 1978 LUV when I was 13. Wish I had it now.

Re: Grandpa's Gentle Men's Chevy

Found this picture from 1973, me at 6 and our helper Alberto. He wasn't the one who shot the door and he put up with me tagging along. I think the truck had argent silver hubcaps that are now white. Does anyone have any pictures of their truck wearing this type of hubcap as I want to paint the caps I have. Thanks

I sure do feel lucky that I have it. It sat in the "junkyard since 1993".

Re: Grandpa's Gentle Men's Chevy

Period correct V8 swap isn't hard at all. V8 saddles moved to the existing holes in the frame made for that. Radiator, shroud etc.
