VIN decoding help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I just purchased a 1970 Chevy pickup. It has no engine or tranny, but I would like to know where I can get a complete list of what this vehicle came with by using the VIN. carfax.com won't do anything older than '81. Is there anywhere else I can find everything out about this truck at?

The VIN will tell you general info (6 or 8 cyl, 2 or 4WD, year, etc.). If you want to know the options that came on the truck, look on the inside of the glove box door. Every option should be listed there.

GM record keeping wasn't as precise back then as it is now. Unless your vehicle was made in Canada, there is no way to trace back to your original build sheet based on VIN. In Canada, they kept better records and you can get this info for a fee (Note to all CA members, do not have the phone # for this, but I know it's possible).

As mentioned, the glove box will give you most of the important details if intact and legible. The model # will tell you body style, drivetrain and engine configuration (fleet vs step, 2wd vs 4wd, and I6 vs V8). It won't give specifics regarding CID etc. The VIN will tell you where it was built. Go to GMC Pauls . There is a VIN and model # decoder there.

If you are really lucky you may find the original build sheet tucked under the seat springs.

If it has the original seat, try looking under it in the bottom springs of the seat and also in the back of the seat, they usually put the build sheets there. And look on the glovebox door also.
