? SPID ? Why do some have (order no.) in lower right

Most spids do not have
‘order no.’
At lower right

If one does

WHY ?

Most likely the truck was custom ordered, and thats the number of the order.

Plant to plant variation, based on their preference.

Every truck is "ordered" (and "sold"), either by the customer specifications or by a dealer for generic dealer stock before it is built. There is no way to differentiate at this point, unless you were able to get the invoice from the GM Heritage Center (which you can't until 1976 ish) and it showed a customer name on the invoice.

The dealer order number is the primary tracking handle until the order is forwarded to the appropriate final assembly location, at which time a concatenated PVI ("Primary Vehicle Identifier"), CSN ("Carrier Sequence number") and General Assembly ("GA") sequence number are created.

At that point the GA sequence number is the primary identifier of the vehicle until it leaves the assembly plant. Once it leaves the plant the VIN takes over that role.

I have only seen these numbers on a limited number of trucks, so also assumed these were special orders. Another "why" to ponder.

With all that being said
It sounds like there is really no answer WHY some trucks have (order no)
On the spid

It just depended what each plant felt like doing ?

I always assumed it was a truck that had been Specically ordered by a customer
Vs , one that was a group order by a dealership

"Concatenated" means "linked together, in a chain". I only learned that a few weeks ago but I can use it here because these numbers are created and released in that order, and are forever linked together.

Actually - It gets worse. If the vehicle is destined for Engineering or Marketing use it will get a "fleet" number for use while it is in GM service. Like "CP5085" (two wheel drive pickup, 1985 model year, 1/2 ton, sequence number 85) or "KS7187" (4wd Suburban, 1987 model year, 3/4 ton, number 87).

So - I have to "translate" depending who I am talking to in order for them to know which vehicle I'm talking about.

If the order is still at Central Office I use the Dealer Order number.

If it's in the body shop at the assembly plant I use the PVI.

If it's in the trim shop I have to use the CSN.

Once it gets to the Final Line everybody uses the GA sequence number. Nobody ever cares about the VIN in the assembly plant.

Or, if it's in service at the Milford Proving Ground, then I have to refer to it by its fleet number.

It gets kind of complicated, especially if you are building (or have just built) eleven hundred or twelve hundred pre-production units.

My C20 Highlander has as order number as well on the SPID. What about the number that is at the top of the SPID towards the right side (376704 on my SPID pic). What does that indicate?

I have noticed on my CST K5 Blazer, all the Cheyenne's and the Super all have order numbers and the customs do not. might be a coincidence . a1

I'll have to give that some thought.

Mine is 515906, which doesn't correspond to anything obvious:

Not the last six of the VIN.

Not the GA sequence number (mine was number "87". I don't know the full sequence number).

Not a model number. Not a build date. Not the order number.

Maybe it's the PVI or CSN.

So - not sure.

Owning these trucks has been a concatenated experience for me since '73. I hope I can keep on concatenting on, as Joe Dirt might say (once the word was explained that nobody ever knew).

I have seen variations in SPIDs of many sorts. I always wondered about the trucks with no info in the WB box or special paint code up in the SE box. That 39xxxxx number on dave's SPID might be the part# for the SPID? Sure looks like a PN to me (didn't run it)

That’s correct: the seven digit number 3986681 is the part number for the blank adhesive label.

I was referring to the six digit number 376704.
