Paint on Block
Does anyone know why so many engine blocks are painted orange? I just bought a 69 Chevy back in July and they guy I bought it from said they person before him modified the motor. But it was painted orange. Next year I am going to paint it the same color as the truck. Thanks.

Thats the color they were painted at the factory. Personally, I don't like Chevy Orange. I painted my engine Cummins Green. It's close enough to my trucks body color that people think I matched them on purpose but I painted the engine that color long before I got my truck.

This may sound dumb but it makes some sense. I was told the orange was to help in tracing oil leaks.

Rumor has it that the oval track boys paint(ed?) their blocks flat black to dissipate heat.. Personally, I've always been fond of the blue color Ford uses. Chevy orange always looked a little gawdy. I think my next block, however, will be happy face yellow.
That makes me wonder if anyone has ever taken the time to smooth out an entire block. You know, sort of "polish" the iron. Sure, it's kind of pointless, but it'd look neat I think. While you're at it, just get a couple hundred cans of that "fleck stone" stuff!

Simple. Orange adds 25 HP at the flywheel!
It's been dyno tested man! And since I said it, it must be true! I've been going through the Summit catalog making a list of all the things that are described as "Bolt on 25 HP." I'm going to buy them all and drive off into the sunset with a 5000 HP engine! Brian |

I saw a motor block that a guy totally smoothed and polished. It was on Camaro.net. It looked pretty cool but it took a massive amount of time to do.

Quite a few of the Super Rod and street rodder types do the smoothed engine.I think it would be too much work for something that gets driven daily.I also hate to think of romping on it too hard and having to do another block cause I blew the engine.I guess it would be cool in a show vehicle but way more work than I would put into it.
