Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
1970 350.
Mostly stock Edelbrock intake, 600 edelbrock carb Summit full length headers. Getting custom pipes installed next week with and H pipe. Purchased flowmaster 40 delta flows but not installed. Any members running the 40 or 50 delta flow and offer any input on either? Want a nice tone but not obnoxious loud. Thanks for any info. Mark

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
I listened to many muffler sound bytes on Youtube, and came away thinking the Delta Flow 50's had the sound I liked.

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
I have had both and still have the 50s on my blazer with ceramic coated headers H pipe and rear exit behind back tires. Has a nice growl when you accellerate and quiet at idle. I am extremely happy with them. The 40s were too loud for me. Thinking about putting a set of 50s on my truck when I redo my exhaust.

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
Thanks for the replies. It's such a tough call. You tube videos help but nothing like hearing something in person. Can't consider a video with cats on them either. Just not the same.
I'm going to have the 40 deltas installed. Welded system but going to clamp the muffler in case I want to go to the 50 deltas later. I'll post results and video here for others to search in the future. Thanks Mark

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
I have the 50 series delta flows on my big block Camaro. At idle you can definitely tell it's not stock, but it's not obnoxious. A couple of my friends went with the 40's and told me they wish they would have went with the 50's. I've been told numerous times, that my car sounds really good when I'm accelerating aggressively.
Just my 2cents, but I'm glad I went with the 50's. |

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
Forgot to add.. I have a stock 03 ford F150 with a 5.4 that I had to have a new muffler put on years ago. The muffler shop only had the 40 series. I was never so glad when it rusted through a year or so ago, I could finally get something quieter put on it. Even it was obnoxious with a 40's series on it.

I have 40s on my 350 sbc swapped 84 cutlass. Yes they’re loud but I love it. Straight pipes no cats. I can’t wait till i put headers on it.

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
And then you have the issue with running turn downs or all the way out of the back.
Out of the back, I don't think it will matter which ones. Turn downs will be where the small difference will be noticed. But I recommend if doing turn downs, make sure (and watch) the guy point them to the outside of the truck just a little, so the sound doesn't bounce right back up at the bed floor and resonate in the cab.

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
I was in the same position. I wanted a nice rumble but not obnoxious. I went with the 50's, and I have them exiting on a 45 in front of the rear tire. I really like them a lot. They are not overpowering loud, but when you get into the throttle, they have the right amount of volume and tone. On the highway, they burble along nice with no real drone. They aren't quiet, but they certainly aren't loud like the 40's or 44's.

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
in idle, in gear, you can still hear them. It's not so loud that you cant have a conversation, but you do have to speak up a little. If I start it inside my attached garage, you can definitely hear it idling from inside the house. It'd not super loud, but you can still hear it.

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
I went with 3" 44's on my '69 with a 396BB. Really like the sound, but I can certainly see where some would like a quieter setup like 50's series. I almost wish I had gone with 50's, but I will not be changing anytime soon as I have a fully welded setup with an X pipe and the exhaust ending at 45 degrees sideways after the rear axle under the bed.

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
Thanks everyone for the input and advise.
Update: I installed my long tube ceramic headers and got a custom 2 1/2" exhaust installed today. Slighted midfield 350 Had an "H" pipe installed also Flowmaster 40 series delta flows. Pipes exit out back bumper straight back. Verdict. For me. Perfect! Great sound, Loud but not too loud. Barks pretty good when you get on it though. Nice rumble at idle. Muscle car sound. You can have a conversation in the truck no problem and listen to the radio easily, maybe slightly more volume. I'll post a YouTube video to help others in future searches. Best way I can put it is, if your worried about being loud go with the 50 delta flow. Thanks again Mark

Re: Flowmaster 40 delta flow vs flowmaster 50 delta
Have a pair of 70's on my 73 with a rowdy 400 sbc sounds good dual 3 inch no H
Pair of 40's under the 68 on a stock 454 is almost louder than my 70's but not super loud. No H 2-1/2 too the back bumper. Wish they both had magnaflows
