Another what is this for question
I was looking at the wires and connections under the dash recently and noticed yet another disconnected wire that I'm unfamiliar with. Can any of you knowledgeable members tell me what this is for?

Maybe accessory glove box light? Follow the other end and see where it leads. Many accessories use that kind of connection.

Re: Another what is this for question
I am confused on how to answer when I don't know what year C10 you have? I have a 67 and have had everything wire related out, never saw that one. It appears to be OEM type Delphi 67 female and GM (RED) is battery power not switched. ORG is switched by key on or ACC.
Could be going to amp meter but mine was routed thru the dash harness and was not 10 AWG like in the photo. I would have to check my GM Tech Wire handbook to ID the connector type, but the Delphi 67 or 64 is basically 1/4" (0.250") and can handle 40 amps. The ammeter uses a shunt that carries the bulk of current around the armatures windings. When working on something made 50 years ago, people can add wires from a bone yard vehicle to operate something they have added, or attempt to fix something the wrong way. Is this B+ all the time? Does it disappear behind the inside fuse box and go into the bulkhead connector into connector slot #? There is an upper and lower bulkhead connector, so look carefully to locate to where it goes. That will help. I am not an ACE on these forums and the vehicle's info in question maybe available, if so and I don't know how to see it, I apologize. I was raise on a farm in a modern house built new in 1963 and had a wooden crank phone and a party line, so I am a little behind the "Tech" generation. This forum has some very good 67-72 wiring diagrams or schematics. The location of this wire in the bulkhead connector is the best way to start. Also, provide year, other info like hot or not. |

Re: Another what is this for question
Thanks for the info LH Lead-Foot. Those wiring diagrams give me headache, but I'll also look more closely when I get back under the dash. It's a 1970 C20 which is also noted in my signature.

Re: Another what is this for question
Don't fear wiring or schematics, just think of them as little hoses that carry water. The bigger the hose, the quicker you can fill a bucket. The only difference is, the water that comes out, has to go back to the pump, to complete the circle. In electrical circuits, it's the battery or alternator thru ground via the frame or wire.
If a fat lady steps on your hose, the water just drops off to a trickle. That's the same as resistance in electrical systems. Otherwise, they are SNAKE's of different colors, sizes and lengths that don't bite. Note; Unless they are hooked to a coil or distributor, those will bite if you mess with them! P.S. Delphi 56 terminal type Specs (49 amps / 16 volts DC) Voltage drop <3ma per Amp |

Re: Another what is this for question
That would be the main power to the blower motor relay. The other wire coming off it is for the cigarette lighter.
It plugs into the 15A Cig. fuse location. (Photo from this thread "fuse panel detailed description or diagram" ) Now if you had A/C just the cigarette lighter would go in the 15A Cig. fuse location. Blower power would then come from the 25A Air Cond. fuse location. Dose your blower work?

Re: Another what is this for question
I just pulled this harness and it had a hack-job squeez-on style jumper harness on the open cut. It is a dual battery harness off a 72 C20.

If you just want a cigarette lighter unplug the orange wire and plug it into the Cig. fuse location

Re: Another what is this for question
Not yet. It's just something I noticed while replacing all of the bulbs in the gauge cluster. Everything works and I really don't need or care about the cigarette lighter right now.

Re: Another what is this for question
Thanks to everyone who helped decipher the mystery wires. They appear to be wires to the blower. I decided to get a new cigarette lighter and replaced the old one which was missing its wires and looked corroded. My lighter works now, even though I don’t smoke, and I am happy.

Re: Another what is this for question
I have a similar configuration that runs to CIG on the fuse box. One difference is the red and orange I think are swapped. For what it's worth, here are some notes from my truck. Also a picture of the set-up. You might disregard the captions (ha!). I removed all the wires and was just learning.
Fuse Box: CIG: There are two 12 AWG red wires connected at CIG.: • One red wire routes to the cigarette lighter. • A connector with two 12 AWG ORANGE wires connects to the other red wire: o One orange wire routes to the blower motor relay and then onto the anti-dieseling relay. o One orange wire has a connector on the end. Nothing was connected to it. If I recall, my truck didn't have an accessory for it. Something like roof lights, I don't remember.
