1971 C10 Steering

My newly acquired 71 has loose steering. It wonders around a lot especially on rough roads and changing lanes. how do I know if it is the steering box or linkage?

I am still learning about these.. I just ordered a new one fro mine (leaking). Interested to see what everyone says. My guess it's the box.

Have someone turn the wheel while you check for loose tie rods and play in the steering box.

I would lift the front end and inspect all your steering components. My truck had loose steering when I first picked it up and I attributed it to not being rack and pinion. I hadn’t driven one for about 20 years. When I did some suspension upgrades, I discovered my pitman arm was loose. The nut was only finger tight. It could’ve ended badly for me.

you can also jack up the front end and try to move your tires back & forth while someone looks at the tie rods, center link, idler arm ,and pitman arm for play...let us know what you find

Well sir I have been battling this as well. I have every part new even new redhead gear box and it still has more play than I like. Toe out can cause it. I'm actually wondering if the column it self could have play in it? I dont have a rag joint anymore so I know it is not that!

The wider front tire will grab the ruts and cause it to pull. If it has a manual box, you can loosen the nut and turn the screw in a full turn or so.

OP.... Looks like your lowered? . Are you on drop springs in front? do you feel like it may also be bump steer contributing to the "loose" feel? Mine was like that until i did drop spindles now it is perfect.
