Craigslist... a thing of the past?

Any of you guys noticed a reduction in activity on Craigslist over the last year or so? I’ve been buying and selling vehicles on C/L for quite some time now. Not just 67-72 trucks but a wide variety of vehicles... maybe an average of 5 per year. Even when they were priced high I’d still get activity just nothing serious. Now, it seems like the only activity I get are scammers. I’m being told Facebook marketplace is where it’s at now??? A little discouraging for someone who doesn’t Facebook. Any of you have similar experiences?

I use all forms of searching- Facebook, searchtempest, car-part.com to find what I want/need.

Looks like you have to be a member of facebook in general, and if you are you may have to be a member of each particular group. I was unable to see any extra stuff beyond a landing type page.

I don't have Facebook either . I use craigslist too , but try offerup as well . It's an app and it's really easy to use . I barely ever use cl anymore .

Facebook is indeed dying a slow death. I still use them, in fact just sold a 57 Chevy 2 door HT for asking price to a guy that only searched Craigslist. I had the car listed on about a dozen Facebook groups themed for Tri-5 cars and classic cars.

The thing I dislike about Craigslist is they way people list things....I usually look for specific things and if they misspell one thing I'll never find it.....

100%. I’m in the same boat. It’s lame. Facebook is also lame.

On a similar note, I’ve noticed cl sellers are increasingly non-responsive. I suppose they are tired of getting bombarded with lowball offers and scammers. That or people forget it’s an actual person on the other end, and don’t feel the need for basic courtesy.

Yeah....the nonresponsive sellers piss me off.....try and try to contact them and they won't answer you for anything....

Yeah I wish they would make a lot of common misspellings bring you to the word your looking for. But our trucks themselves are confusing if I'm looking for a 80s truck you have to search chevy truck , Chevrolet truck, pick up, pickup, c10, c20, silverado, etc

But sometimes if you know how to search common Misspelled words it can work out in your favor , years ago I bought a strategy guide off ebay for a old video game for a 1\3 of what they were selling for as the seller couldn't spell strategy and I was the only one who bid on it

I once bought a truck of eBay when the seller had it listed in the wrong place.....got it for a deal....i just happened across it while looking for something else

I find it's peoples' mentality that puts a thing in the past. Craigslist is a good as ever... since before the next big trend got waved in the face of those who bite at whatever passes by. Any form of listing items for sale is only as good as the people who use it. I guess if you are in it to flip then you better follow the herd.

And then we would drive two hours on a 2 line description "ps, pb, no rust, must see to appreciate". Get there and it's a dirty old rust bucket with a power steering pump in the trunk from another vehicle. Barking cats and dogs and some dude in his underwear answering the door of the trailer optional. LOL

But my Dad and I did this on Sunday afternoons for a couple of years...memories!

My problem with both CL and Offer Up. Is that buyers don't read the description. I live in a small town about 45 minutes north of Bakersfield, but my ad's show up on Bakersfield CL.

I clearly state that I'm not in Bakersfield. But nobody seems to pay attention to that.

I get emails asking for directions and when I tell them, I get. "Oh never mind'. Or they just don't show up.

I had a funny thing happen with a non responsive seller as well. I made an offer on Offer Up for a neon sign. No response.

The price dropped and my wife made an offer. Same thing...Nothing. Fast forward 2 months go by and it's relisted at an even lower price. My wife emails the seller because I had given up by this point.

My wife got a quick response this time. Deal was made and I'm on my way. I didn't have to go far since she (the seller) lived just a few doors down from me. I could see her house from mine. Go figure. It was right there the whole time. Right under my nose.

It turns out she was taking care of her sick mother and uncle. Trying to get the property ready to sell. Splitting her time between So.Cal. and here. She just seemed overwhelmed.

So, I took away the fact that sometimes there's a reason for people that don't respond quickly. Sometimes they just have a lot on their plate.

I still have pretty good luck with CL. I have been lucky in finding vehicles or parts I wanted and not been overwhelmed by total flakes.

I recently looked at a 68 Pontiac Firebird I found on craigslist, a legit almost original 98% rust free car. It's had one crappy repaint back in like 1994, but hasn't actually been on the road since 1982 and has been in a dry building its whole life. You can see the original paint on the sides/backsides of the panels. No holes ANYWHERE on this car. 100% OEM GM sheet metal. The downside... original 250 OHC six car, almost zero options, and NOT a sprint version. The seller said over two weeks he had well over 100 texts, probably as many emails, about 10 "no shows", 4 or 5 tire kickers, a couple flippers that offered about 1/3 of what it was worth... and me...

But yes, I have noticed a steady decline in just the number of classics for sale on Craigslist and was wondering why myself. I figured it was some new "thing" everyone was using instead.

Good thing Craigslist goes far beyond vehicle buying/selling, classic or whatever. I always find what I'm looking for and sell what I'm selling on Craigslist, so in my world it's as good as ever. A friend offers old stock windows and skylights up for the taking, so I run down and snatch them up. Post them all as a lot that evening and the next morning I see I have an e-mail from someone leaving their phone number. I call and the guy is on his way, buys them. When I posted them up I searched 8' truck caps and found a couple I saved. I e-mailed on one and along with the response to my listing the next morning was the guy with the cap responding to my inquiry. After the guy went off with the windows/skylights I hit the road to get the cap. All this happened in less than 24 hours and just days before Spring Carlisle, so I had the cap for a camper for the show paid for by the bldg materials and I had plenty of change. Too me, that sort of thing is what makes the world go around and it happens on Craigslist like nowhere else, and that ain't dead. Craigslist has an awful lot of cool classic vehicles for sale for a place that is not even dedicated to that. To this day it is billed as a local format for buying and selling. It's just so good that people are using it like Ebay or Hemmings
