Need advice... sorry a long post!
This is my 1972 Cheyenne Super, Shortbox with factory 402BB, Air, Tilt, Tach, Cruise and bucket seats. I have had this just sitting for about five years now... collecting the parts for the resto.
I have collected new original Gm inner and outer fenders,Rad Support, and Gm tailgate. The bedsides, front bed panel and inner box wells are Goodmark. The hood cab and doors are mint so I am going to keep them. I have all the new chrome and interior as well as all of the steering and brake parts to make her new again. I have assembled the truck with the new body panels now to ensure they all fit well together. It seems to be ok the doors have a nice alignment as well as the front clip. It was fairly painless getting the gaps and body lines to come together. My plan is to blow the chassis apart and have it all powdercoated. My question is to those of you that have been down that road before... I want to take all of the panels to bare metal and start fresh with a good epoxy primer to start the body work off right. I was hoping to paint everything off the chassis individually in stages. Such as the cab and doors first, put them on the refinished chassis and then the front clip and at last the box. I will be painting her black so it shouldnt be hard to match the paint. I was hoping to get some feedback on this procedure maybe some pros and cons of doing it this way. Maybe you might suggest a better way. Sorry such a long post thanks for the time.

It's best to paint all of your body panels at the same time. The reasoning for this is unless you have a climate controled paint booth you can never get the same temp of humidity. The color will be close but will never be 100% the same. Just smething I picked up from working in and around body shops for 3 years...

I paint all of my trucks in pieces. But my garage is heated with a forced air heater with a sealed combustion chamber. I prefer doing it that way because Everything gets painted. There's no manuvering the gun around tight spaces. BTW, I live in the desert so humidity isn't much of a problem. Chuck is right though, temp and humidity play a big factor in color match. Mine was done in peices, but we used the same booth for everything, took us all day, I liked the fact that you don't get any masking lines when you do it in peices

I think the biggest concern would be the type of black being sprayed. Buy enough to finish the job and if it's a metallic mix it all at once because it will likely not match otherwise.

I've painted several of mine apart. I color sand and buff all areas, including inside bed and back sides of fenders. As long as you color sand every piece, any difference in texture will be negated.
I painted my orange truck in pieces over the course of 3 months, with no problem with color difference over the whole truck. Believe me, I'm a picky M.F. and I won't tolerate mis matched panels. Since you're painting it black, you should be good to go concerning color continuity over the whole truck.

You have to be carful painting metalics when the truck is in pieces. If the direction of paint application isn't the same as the ajoining parts then the flip of the metalic can be different and even though all other factors are the same the paint may not match panel to panel. It's kind of like the nap of a fabric or a piece of carpet. If the grain isn't the same way it reflects light different and it doesn't look right.

Thanks for the question. I had the same concerns and now I know. I need to assemble my truck and have the body work done then take it apart for paint.
