First Drive this AM since Crate! Also foams too tall/firm!

Hi guys! Just wanted to post the latest with my 70 GMC. I bought a crate engine from Radley about 4 weeks ago and finally had it ready to drive this AM. I bought the 350/290 SBC crate with the dress-up kit. Wish I had a GMC air filter but oh well. Felt great to cruise it around the neighborhood early this AM. Couldn't go far as I don't have rear lights/bed etc hooked up yet but coming soon.

BTW what I bought the PUI foams like people were saying but they are way too firm and I sit too high. Now I am planning on taking the seat apart and cutting about 1-2 inches off the back side of the foam so my head doesn't hit the roof and so I don't have to duck to look out windshield!

First time I've ever did a crate so I was a bit nervous. Nerve racking monitoring fluids, RPMs, temps, etc. Had to do it in 3 10 minute bouts of 2000 to 2500. Started right up though! Now I'm gonna drive around neighborhood for another 15 to 20 min then oil change and ready for next 500 mi before next oil change. Added the zinc supplement at startup. Hope the $20 bottle of zinc did something... Now it starts right up and sounds good.

When I bought this truck a few years back I was just gonna drive it and have fun. Now several $$ later and tons of hours I'm getting closer to my initial goal. Funny how these trucks pull you in and turn into a major project if not careful! Too late for me!

I see one of your next projects is a hard fuel line. Hate to see rubber hoses like that.

I second the change need on the rubber fuel hoses and worse still is the plastic fuel filter...not a good choice under the hood...

Grab yourself a metal cased filter...and a hard line...soon...

Would hate to see this beauty go up in smoke...

Huh, the rubber fuel line never crossed my mind being a problem. Thanks for the heads up. I see tons of pics on here where guys have done the same thing. I'll have to look into it. I this doesnt necessarily mean it's right but, this is my 3rd c10 and all of them were setup this way. How/where do you connect a steel fuel filter on a steel fuel line? Thx

You can get a fuel line with filter like this and then run another line from the pump up to the filter.

You can buy prebuilt lines at the parts store. Ones with the ends flared. Just need to bend them to fit.

Lots of room under the carb on that side especially when you install the heat spacer you’re gonna need. Like this.

I bought new fuel line from tank to fuel pump and there is a rubber fuel line connection there. Is that where a fuel filter would normally be place and then pump to carb would be a direct line? Also I'll have to look but my carter afb carb looks like it was designed to have a rubber fuel line.

Normal to have rubber hose to connect your fuel line to the pump. Filters are best between pump and carb but before the pump works too.
The eddy fuel line I linked bolts on in place of the hose adaptor on your afb.

Like I said in post #7 you can buy fuel/brake lines at the parts store that are already flared with fittings on the ends ready to be bent into shape.
Or use high quality braided fuel hoses.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. Definitely something I will change over in the near future.

Do you know what was done originally with these trucks new? Did they use inline fuel filters? When I look at LMC truck fuel lines there is not a picture of any fuel filters. It just shows hard lines with the exception at the rubber line under the cab.

Filter was in the carb inlet.
Stock carbs were quadrajets or 2G 2bbl’s.
I don’t recall what the afb equipped small blocks used. The afb was used on some early 327’s.

I did a search.
The afb on the 327’s had a fuel inlet at the front of the carb with a glass bowl filter attached.

As an alternative to cutting the seat foam, you might try the 2 inch lowering brackets I did from Full Custom Fabrication. Mine had the same issue and it was a great help.

Basically you just want to minimize the amount of hose that fuel is flowing through. A basic NHRA tech inspection requires less than 6 inches of hose in the system. (Which the OE's exceed all the time.) Another advantage is less hose means less debris in the filter as the fuel disintegrates the inside of the hose, and the pieces are carried to the carb. And in this day and age of cheap manufacturing and aggressive fuel mixes is a real problem. (See my WMB thread for my recent hose findings. Post 380)
The plastic fuel filters are known to deform over time and leak. Not to mention they are not very heat resistant.

I love those kind of drives around the neighborhood. Gets the project excitement back up to a boil!!!

Thanks for the info. I am definitely going to change the fuel line from pump to carb but just looking at options. I like the idea of all steel and may do the edelbrock with filter adapter then get bendable 3/8 line to finish it off. Does the threads on the bendable fuel line fit the Edelbrock 8126 threads or are there adapters needed?

I have been looking at those. The only problems I see is seat becomes unadjustable - which only matters if wife is driving, and I was wanting to put one of those thin 8 inch subwoofers under the seat. Would there be enough room for that?

OregonNed - All that said - Will probably buy the shorter brackets. Di they make a big difference? I have to lean forward and duck a little to look out the windshield.

Yes mine is no non-adjustable but I like the trade off. I can see about measuring under the seat this evening and report.

I feel they did and for me it’s more comfortable. I’m exactly 6’0 and the seat was
