1972 Hood Latch Finish
Does anyone know what the original finish was on the hood latch? I am thinking some plated metal finish.
Also, the bolts that hold the inner fenders to the fenders, were they black or also plated metal finish? Mine is not a perfect truck, but when I do restoration on various areas, I like to do it as original if possible. |

Re: 1972 Hood Latch Finish
If you go back to the original photos of that unrestored light blue one, wasn't the hood latch the one thing that was totally rust colored? I thought perhaps they were left natural... not certain, can't find that pic!

Re: 1972 Hood Latch Finish
That is a good question....Most that I have seen at shows etc. are semi-gloss black, sort of matching the rad. support finish. I would like to do mine factory correct also, but not leave natural....would rust quickly here on the East coast.

Re: 1972 Hood Latch Finish
I'm about 90% certain the latch parts on mine were a black phosphate finish just like the hood hinges since the truck was new. I'm sure the inner fender bolts were.
That said, I used satin black paint on the latch parts and hinges when I did the restoration. |

Re: 1972 Hood Latch Finish
Caswell Plating sells a black oxide kit and also a black phosphate kit, I used the black oxide kit left several bolts outside on the lawn they got watered every other day for a week and no signs of rust. I do live in the desert so the climate here is arid. there are numerous videos on you tube on this

Re: 1972 Hood Latch Finish
Hers the hood latch on my 2400 mile truck. It’s coated like a cast grey. Same as the hood hinges

I'm not saying that 2400 mile truck ain't stock just if you go to Wal*Mart and get a can of Krylon 1613 and use that, it will match all the semi-gloss black parts under the hood.
