Anyone have insight into combined weights for duallys?
I am looking for a tow rig and most literature limits the trailer to 10,000. Most constructions trailers weigh 6-7 empty so any equipment puts me over the DOT limit. anyone have OEM literature on total capacities? Chris |

It varies greatly depending on the drivetrain, brakes, frame, suspension and so on. I had a 84 c30 dot rated for 14,500 gvw with a 8x12 flatbed I used to grab forklifts with. Bed was dock height and cut the forklifts up right on the bed.

Re: max gcwr max gvwr
Need to know powertrain detail, right down to the rear axle ratio.
Model year would help, too. K

Re: max gcwr max gvwr
Update,
I spoke to the "heritage dept" of Gm and they confirmed even for a ~2000 3500 truck the max trailer weight is 10,000. The 3500HD,~2002 is just 11,500. I think these weights are more for the warranty aspect of the truck and not the capabilities. But 10K on a crew cab dually means the truck can hardly legally tow any piece of equipment. If i decent trailer weighs 4-6 only mini skid steer or excavator cold be towed. He said there was no way to change/update the door sticker. This is a bummer because i wanted and square body to tow a cat 259d but the unit weighs 9k plus ~5K for a trailer. I know the truck can do it, just not legally. Chris |

Re: max gcwr max gvwr
Bumper pull or gooseneck/5th wheel type?
For example, my GMT800 truck is rated 12,000 with the platform hitch but 26,000 for gooseneck/5th wheel. That might be a way to bump up your legal towing capability. K

Where on your truck/sticker does it distinguish gooseneck/platform. I have never seen it split. I would like to pull a gooseneck tilt trailer. Most weigh ~8500 pounds push a skid steer of 9000. What is your max trailer weight?

Re: max gcwr max gvwr
I get needing to know the specifics about the driveline. I think most of the numbers are a joke.
A good example, a 2004 3/4 ton single rear wheel has a trailer weight of 15,500 for a deisel and only 10,200 for a gasser. I think the lower numbers were for warranty and insurance purposes??? It just stink that a 80/90s truck with a updated driveline line can not get a higher rating per Idaho DOT |

For example - one of the determining factors was the ability to launch up the 16% test grade when loaded to GCW. That knocks a lot of the ratings down farther than what you or I would do in real life. You do things differently when it is just your truck, vs when you have to cover your a$$ for 15 million trucks. I understand about the warranty and liability aspect. I wish there was a way to update a unit if it has been restored/modified. For example, i did a 89 burb resto. As OEM it could not pull anything. It could barely pull away from a red light it was such a dog. It now has a fresh motor, cam, exhaust, ignition, 456 gears, 4L80 trans, bagged with new rear springs from a 3500. The thing tows like a dream. I would much rather invest in an older truck than drop $$$$ on a new one. Plus i do not have all the emission/computer stuff to deal with. |
