Is there a number on my engine that I could look up and see when it was made?
If so where would it be located?

Yes. There is a machined pad on the front of your engine, right where the passenger side cylinder head bolts to your block. It should have a sequence of numbers, and a 2 or 3 letter code (ex. TDJ).

There is another, less accessible place too. On the back of the block, behind the driver's side cylinder head, there is a large number cast in (ex. 3970010). The letter code is proably the most useful, along with the number code, you should be able to pinpoint what and when your engine was made.

Decode the numbers at www.nastyz28.com , or www.mortec.com . Nastyz28 has suffix codes (lettered code), while Mortec does not

Also on the side of the block, there is a code that indicates the shift, conveyor line and month, day and year the block was cast. Exmp: CON2 (clock symbol w/big hand on a number=7pm) F 26 8 [June 26, 1968] A=Jan,B=Feb etc. The year numeral is only 1 digit so you have to guess the right decade.

Ok heres what I found. This was on the ledge near the alt. 1m0(or o)82767SVP.

The casting numbers are not always on a machined surface......My block number were casted in to the block.....

Casting numbers (and casting date codes) are never on a machined surface. They are cast into the block (or manifold, or head, or whatever) at the foundry. Block ID numbers are always stamped on a machined surface - they are stamped at the engine assembly plant.

Oh, and Skokie, those numbers look odd. Is it a small block, big block, 6 cylinder, or what?
