Steereing column length

I'm going to replace the crappy tilt column in my 64 C-10.
The column is an automatic tilt column from an unknown GM donor.
The automatic shifter is sloppy, and the ignition switch is sloppy as well.

I don't want to use a column from a 70's van, and can't afford an ididit, or flaming river direct fit column.

I would like to use a universal column, what would be the best length to buy ??


Has anyone used a universal column, if so what length.

Why not a van? They are perfect swaps for our trucks.

I had bought a Chinese Import aftermarket Chrome Column..... NEVER EVER DO THAT. Mine broke internally, the universal joint in the tilt portion is Cheap garbage Plastic. it disintegrated before i even had the truck on the road. I ended up fininding a 72 Van Column at the swap meet. If your going to buy aftermarket buy flaming river or IDIDIT. only ones i would trust.

I know about the van column, I have looked for over a year, no luck.

I got lucky on my 72 Van tilt. I bought it on eBay for $119.00. I was the only bidder & the tilt PRND tilt indicator was broken also the clear plastic PRND piece looked bad (both available reproduction and fairly cheap) but this was about 10 years ago.

Not exactly $119.00 delivered but less than a Chinese knock off and a heck of a lot less than a Flaming River or Ididit

A van column is the way to go. Easy to adapt by using a collapsible intermediate shaft from a later Chevy truck. This keeps it all GM
Aftermarket columns may be OK, but parts might be an issue.
Here's a tip for you, go find a mini home or motor home on a GM chassis. Most will have a tilt column which is nearly identical to the van. These are fairly common, I know of several in my area.
I've adapted van columns to many other vehicles over 20+ years.
