Water pump length?

I'm getting ready to order my vintage a/c system. One of the questions they ask is long or short water pump? The engine is a 1984 400 sbc all stock. Any way to tell what water pump I have? Thanks

Re: Water pump length?

Yup!
Short pump has no room (maybe 1/4 inch) between it and the timing cover.
Long pump has room to poke your fingers in there (almost).

Just to be on the safe side. Post a pic.
Maybe your 66 year old eyeballs are no better than my 68 year old ones.

Post a picture man. I wouldn't think an 84 would have a short pump.

Re: Water pump length?

Looks long to me.
You can measure them too.
Long is 7 1/4 inches from block to fan mount.
Short is about 5 1/2 inches.
And your alternator won’t fit on that side with a short pump.

Re: Water pump length?

Thanks for all the info I will go out in the morning and measure. Looks like that comparison pictures of the S.B. water pumps I have that blocked port on the back also. I do believe maybe a long shaft then. I'm going to put the alt. on the driver side where it belongs for my truck. Thanks tdangle for the pic and demian5 for questioning it.Geezer I told you my fingers are pudgy!
