Disappointed with ECE parts (rust)
Installed these parts not even 6 months ago and already rusting pretty bad. I know it's just surface rust and easy to clean up and paint. But if I had known i would have painted before installing.
It's like there wasn't even a finish applied. It's pretty uniform and I didnt spray anything corrosive on them. Is this normal for aftermarket parts? (my first project in classic cars) |

Re: Disappointed with ECE parts (rust)
That's normal for cast iron parts. They are bare metal and will rust if you don't paint or coat them. Not just aftermarket parts, factory parts will do the same if left bare.

Re: Disappointed with ECE parts (rust)
Yup. They come from the factory with a film of oil on them but it wears off in a short time.
When I get parts I either paint right away or at least put a satin clear on, if I want to keep the “bare metal” look. |

Re: Disappointed with ECE parts (rust)
You bought raw cast iron parts, not painted, not powdercoated, not coated with anything, you must paint/coat raw metal or it will rust. Or pay extra for powder coated or painted parts.

Re: Disappointed with ECE parts (rust)
thanks everyone!
glad i learned the lesson early. honestly they looked painted. (on one of the calipers i had to poke/chip the 'paint' as it sealed the brake bleeder port. |

Re: Disappointed with ECE parts (rust)
I am a bit surprised they didn't look much worse quicker than 6 months. My drums were pure rust within 24 hours of installation before I got around to painting them.

Re: Disappointed with ECE parts (rust)
Did you think your drums were painted? ECE doesn't deserve a thread like this on the internet. I'll take it down if you'd like, since now you know it was your oversight.

sure you can take it down. like i said im new to restoring older vehicles and did not know this was normal. would have been nice if that was mentioned somewhere on the website or on the installation instructions... anywhere. |
