Clutch pedal return spring?
My '87 has a broken torsion spring around the clutch pedal pivot shaft. Looking on LMCtruck, I don't see any mention of my style of spring. Instead, they show only an extension spring up through '84. I don't have the holes for the extension spring, but do have the notches for the torsion one.
Does anyone know where I could get a replacement torsion-style spring? Thanks. |

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
Thanks a lot for posting that site! I've been wishing for some access to GM parts diagrams for some time now. It's been pretty handy with tractors, to be able to go to the manufacturer's sites, look up the part I want, and google the part number. Until now, I've had no way to do that with my truck.
But yeah, it looks like no one is carrying this spring. I'll see if there's some way I can drill and adapt a common spring to fit instead. I'll have to guess on how strong the spring was supposed to be. I'm assuming that on both the brake and the clutch pedal, the springs are only just strong enough to bring the pedal to the top of the stroke. Does this sound right? |

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
GM72K10, how do I go directly to a desired page? All I can do is go through them sequentially, starting at page 1. There do seem to be shortcuts to "front axle/steering", and "transmission/brakes."
I'm looking at the "52R" catalog from 1990, which seems to be the most applicable to my '87. Link below. Any assistance appreciated. http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=56090 |

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
I can sequentially "turn" the pages, and get to the index within the first couple. The problem is, if I want to get to page 985, I have to click the "next page" button 985 times.
How did you get to the page you linked above? It would take me an hour of clicking to reach it by my method. |

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
an idea that might work .
hydrobost brakes have a return spring on the brake pedal and have a tab that slides over the brake rod mount pin and then the spring hooks to it and to the hanger frame . you might be able to use these parts to rig up a good return spring setup if no replacement springs are available. also in my home town there is a spring company that makes TONS of springs from super tinny to big . they might be able to help i dont know . but they would prob want to see a good one to know the shape / size wire / tension used . http://www.fennellspring.com/

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
Sunsoaked, yes, that's the spring I'm referring to. I would love to replace the spring now, while the pedal is out of the truck. It seemed almost impossible to remove the pedal by itself, so I removed the steering column and then the complete pedal bracket. It could be if I looked at it longer, I could have gotten a wrench up to the pivot bolt.
Sweetk30, I looked about that, but it would involve a bit of welding to make it happen. The clutch pedal bracket doesn't wrap around enough to do a drop-in spring replacement. I am actually doing a hydroboost swap, so I do have that spring on the brake pedal. |

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
Another question. Is this the only spring involved on a hydraulic clutch? Is there supposed to be a spring on the clutch fork to pull the throwout bearing away from the pressure plate?
I know the mechanical-linkage clutches used a spring like that, but I haven't had one on my truck. It seems like it should be there, though. |

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
Did you ever find a source for these? I can't find one anywhere!

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
I did not find a source of new springs. I robbed one off a parts truck in a local junkyard.

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
I am glad you found one. Is the truck still there? I could use the clutch pedal, bolt and 2 rods. I ended up with a pedal assembly someone decided to turn into an automatic

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
Sorry , the one I saved is from older type with the large spring that just pulls the pedal up like a big carb spring. Would that not work ?

Re: Clutch pedal return spring?
Thanks for checking. That style won't work as there are no provisions to hook it to on a hydraulic pedal.
