Turn Signal Question

Turn signals on my 72 are too sensitive. Left signal switches OFF if I move the wheel only an inch or two.
When using the right signal, its better, but it too switches off if there is just a little movement in the wheel.
Do you think I just need an adjustment or will I need to replace parts ?

I'm going to replace the steering wheel soon and only want to pull the wheel once and fix the turn signal issue while I'm in there.
I've been reading past posts on replacing turn signal switch but want to figure out what I need before I start. This is non tilt column.

Re: Turn Signal Question

You may not know what parts you need until you remove the wheel. There are two springs that hit a cam when turning the wheel that cancels the signal. The springs could be broken or the cam could be broken. Does your horn work? This cam also connects the horn. The male piece that sticks up thru the wheel locates the cam to the right position. I have seen these broken also. Good luck it isn’t a hard job at all. It helps to have a puller.

Re: Turn Signal Question

If your strg. wheel is not centered it will cause this. Drive the truck & mark the position of the wheel when you are going straight down the road. Line up the marks & pull the wheel. Put it on in the straight ahead position. The front end alignment should be correct when doing this.

Number 27 on page 183 for the switch assembly and number 10 on page 129 for the cancelling cam at LMC. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=129 Might find a board vender that will beat their pricing...?

Re: Turn Signal Question

I just installed a new turnsignal switch from GMCPaul's. Does the same thing, Not sure if there's an adjustment for it. I'll keep an eye on this thread as well.

Thanks for the good info. Yes the horn works. Gonna do the free rent for a puller at local parts store.

Think my wheel is centered but I will check to make sure, thank you!

Thanks for the parts info, good to see what may be needed. Trying to avoid buying parts until I'm sure what's needed. I appreciate your help.

Thanks for posting that, makes me think TS switch is not the culprit.

Hopefully someone else who has solved this problem will post. And I will update this thread when I know something.

When I mark the wheel position, what's the best way to do this? Measure (example 3/4" from top dead center on column to top dead center on wheel) then remove wheel rotate 3/4" and reinstall ?

When driving straight down the road put a chalk mark on the streering wheel hub to the t/s coller. Pull into the shop & line up the marks. Remove the wheel & put it on in the straight ahead position.

I put the horn button in the 10:30 position as shown in the video, but it doesn't seem to help.

My steering wheel was off by about 1/16 of a turn. Corrected it nice and straight now,
but it doesn't help with the turn signals cancelling prematurely.
Still have the same problem.

The good news is the new steering wheel (beautiful early take-off original)
looks terrific.
