Front clip engine electrical

Under my previous thread -Befuddled with engine problem it came down to replacing the engine. As there was other work I wanted to do at the same time, I pulled the from clip.

The engine is now ready to go back in and I want it running and the other work done before I re-install the front clip.

So my question is do I need anything plugged back into the firewall connecter from the front clip to get it running? Are there any other electrical items I need to be aware of besides the starter circuit and 12 volts to the HEI distributor ?

Re: Front clip engine electrical

Which motor did you get?
Do you need to break it in?
That might decide what needs hooked up.

I went with an ATK 350 high performance, roller cam - mid dress. It does require a break in period but not the longer RPM run such as with a flat tappet hydraulic cam.

Make sure the charging system is isolated. Do you have electric guages?

Re: Front clip engine electrical

Are you gonna hook up your rad?
You likely still need some higher rpm for 10 minutes to splash oil everywhere.

Yes - I'm going to make a temporary mounting for the radiator

What do you mean by isolating the charging system? I am converting to a single wire alternator as I re-assemble.

Mechanical oil pressure and water temperature gauges - electrical volt meter.

With only part of the electrical system hooked up you may inadvertantly short something out. Just be sure any wires not being used or hooked up are taped off or insulated. You may want to have your guages powered up so you have the water temp guage available.
Personally I would rather have everything assembled up correctly before start up. That allows me to test everything to be sure it works before jumping into the engine break in. Just my opinion which has no value outside of my head.
