WIW 1972 complete 402 engine

1972 non-a/c manual truck. What’s the value range complete with accessories assuming it’s tired out but no rods through the pan or serious damage? I assume the trans isn’t worth much but I’m curious about that too.

Re: WIW 1972 complete 402 engine

Used engines that are nearly 50 years old are always a roll of the dice. Is it rebuildable? Has it been previously bored. Any cracks that would render it useless? Is the crank serviceable with turning, Heads able to be rebuilt? etc. etc. Therefore, it is hard to put a value on it. The plus is you have all the accessory brackets and dressings, so if someone is looking to convert to a big block, a complete unit is a real plus. As for the trans ( I am assuming it is a 4 speed 465, I haven't been able to get rid of a 70 2wd trans even at near give away price, but that's in my area. Start at $1200/reasonable offers for engine set up? If no bites or offers you can always go down. Big selling point is that an interested party could hear it run. Good luck.

if you decide to break it apart I'd be very interested in all the brackets, pulleys, exhaust manifolds etc...

Re: WIW 1972 complete 402 engine

Thanks for the input. $1,200 seems high to me but that's why I'm asking!

It's not for sale at the moment, but the whole truck may be soon. Thanks for the interest.

Re: WIW 1972 complete 402 engine

I bought a 72 402 last year complete from air cleaner to pan with manifolds and pullies for $300. It was completely disassembled, but complete. Some of the items like the cam, lifters, etc I would never re-use but it came with the engine. I am assuming your engine will have to be completely disassembled and rebuilt as well. Mine did not come with any of the brackets, so having the alternator brackets, PS pump/brackets and PS reservoir are really nice because anyone buying won’t have to worry about lining up pullies, etc. I lucked out and bought the alternator and PS stuff on the forum. Are you planning on letting the radiator, fan, and fan shroud go as part of the deal? That would definitely sweeten the pie.
