I did a quicky watch through the video with sound off (at work) so Im not sure if this was covered. If it was mine and this was a look I was after I would blend in the cut marks with color before I cleared.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
Personally I don’t like the gloss look of polished (original or fake) patina, it’s no longer natural to me. Patina isn’t just about worn down and missing paint, the dullness is also a factor, again for me. I guess some people like patina but also want the gloss, not everyone likes the same thing.
Personally I’d clear it and use a flattening agent to get rid of or minimize the gloss. But I also live in the North East where bare metal rusts much quicker and my truck unfortunately spends most of its time outdoors so it’s more of a necessity than an option. |

I agree with Overdriven, i don't like the look of a shiny patina. I'd go with a satin clear if you want protection on the paint. I tried buffing my 68, it has an old repaint, and then just waxed it. the more I tried to get a shine from the buffing the more paint rubbed off. LOL

I think some original paint trucks look good with clear but not all. That one I say yes! The black primer showing through just a bit looks good glossy.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
That was my first thought. Patina is good paint gone bad. It's a run it as it is look. If you want to do something to it, that thing is paint.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
To me a gloss clear over patina just looks fake. If you need to clear it please do flat clear so it looks real, sort of. As someone who has been painting cars for years I know that any time you paint over rust sooner or later, usually sooner, the paint is going to bubble and flake off. I think we will see the day when there are a lot of cleared original patina paint jobs bubbling and flaking. Then what do you do? No way to save the patina while removing the bad clear.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
And here I went and wasted all my time and money stripping this truck to the bare frame when I could have just clear coated it and sealed all the rust inside .

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
I think that it's all in the eye of the beholder. I've seen a few with Patina that really looked great, but I personally like the looks and shine of a nice paint job. But it's entirely up to the owner.

I think a shiny clear would look good on that truck. Lets face it we can't all or..... we don't all want a new solid color paint job with 15" wheels.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
Really this is personal preference.
But it is fun to see the opinions of everyone. If you do not repaint, and decide to keep the original patina, I do recommend that you do clear coat to have UV protection for the original paint. But with a lot of flattener if you do not want the gloss. You can just adjust the percentage of flattener to get the look that you want. Terry - just another Forum member with an opinion and an . |

I think that truck needs the rust holes fixed and a good paint job. Patina is so 2010 and over-done.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
I recall seeing somewhere that you can use linseed oil or something similar to preserve that and it doesn’t have the clear coat look. Maybe an option to slow down the deterioration.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
This was my experiment with boiled linseed oil. The hood got 1 wipedown and has been outside since spring Carlisle. I haven't touch it since and it's been a very wet spring here. I scrubbed off the sharpie sold on the hood that's were its bare steel. No rust in that time

What you do is mix boiled linseed oil with turpentine. But WD40 does the trick, too.

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
Straight oil rub it on let it sit then wiped off the residue. WD40 and PB Blaster tend to stay sticky. My truck bed gets used trans fluid a couple of times as year. Works well .

Re: Buffing my buddies Patinad c10 I think He should clear coat it what do you think?
I do that mix because it dries. It's like doing clear but doesn't peel. It lasts pretty long, then just hit it again. You can use any thinner, mineral spirits, etc. I got into doing this on old log walls and other wooden things, taught to me by an old-timer, and used the excess mix around the place on my old metal signs and such. It lasts a couple years.
You could use mineral oil, too. That's what I wipe down my tools/equipment with. I never used the WD40 but I know that's what some guys do.
