Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
Hey guys, I’m in a pickle. Does anyone have the dimensions of the rubber ring (#39) in the upper steering column on a non-tilt wheel? Trying to have one made (long story) but mine is so distorted that we can’t get any good measurements. Thanks

Not sure if I have one out of a column or not but I will check in a few minutes. There are some good pictures of the parts in this thread (post #14) If someone else has one apart. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=4800898 LockDoc

I don't find one in my spare parts bins. Maybe someone else will chime in on this. LockDoc

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
I am in the same boat. My rubber ring is toast and the thrust washer is about the same. I cannot find these parts for sale anywhere. Is there a vendor that I can get these from that anyone is aware of?

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
I ended up having my Dad make the rubber ring I needed. I do remember seeing a guy on eBay with a NOS plastic thrust washer though. Good luck.

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
I got both parts on ebay...now I get to see if I can get it all back together properly. The parts I ordered are #3902563 and 3879747. I have a 1971 C20 with non-tilt steering so I will let you know how they work.

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
Any updates on this one? Did the ebay part numbers work? Was anyone able to get the dimensions?
I'm in the process of rebuilding my column and the rubber ring was nowhere to be found. |

Inside diameter is 1 3/8" with a 1/8" thickness. 13/32" tall. There is a shaved area on the outside that is 3/4" long and 1/16" thinner. I will post a picture in a while. LockDoc

Here is a picture. The area between the arrows is 1/16" thinner. If a person could find a piece of an old semi or dump truck mud flap it might work to make one out of. Some of them are pretty thick. LockDoc

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
i would check your local industrial gasket or rubber / hydraulic hose supplier and see if they have something that would work
or Grainger.com

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
Awesome! It does look like an old mud flap. Thanks for the info. I was trying to guess the sizes from the images but this is very helpful.

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
I made my mud flaps from a rubber material purchased from Tractor Supply. They had rolls of various thickness and the flaps have lasted for years. That might be a source for material if you need to make that ring.

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
All good suggestions and much appreciated. I'll rummage through the "spare parts" and see if I can find something.

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
I have these at work we use them as sight glass seals, dimensions are close except for the height (approx 1/4" may be able to glue and stack two of them) 1/8" thick and about 1" ID (stretchable). If you are interested pm me, I am willing to send you two or three if you feel they would work for you, no charge.
Look at this link the height is not included in dimension but a quick call may be able to resolve that https://www.superiorwasher.com/washe...D_value_+1.375 Last edited by 67/Heaven; 05-08-2020 at 01:51 PM. Reason: update dimensions added a link |

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
Suede53 received your PM I will be sending you four this evening. You may want to use the handles of some channel lock pliers and leave one or two to stretch overnight. Hope this helps.

They have to fit over the center part of the white plastic thrust washer so he can use that as a guide. He can warm them up with a heat gun or hair dryer also. LockDoc

Re: Help! Plastic thrust washer and rubber ring
Thanks again for everyone's help. I have been busy with some other things so I haven't been able to do much with the washer 67/Heaven sent.
I did contact Superior Washer. They don't have any stock and the minimum order is for 100. The dimensions they gave are 1.687 OD x 1.375 ID x .125 Thick (PN 850-47-125). |
