window regulator spring

I am having trouble with my window regulator holding the glass in the up position.

The spring fell off at some time. I put it back on with the glass in the up position which I thought would put enough tension to hold the glass u as I cranked it down.

My question is do you have to wind the spring? It is pretty stiff so I am doubting that it has to add a full turn.

Any advice on how to reinstall the spring?
