292 engine removal, what am i missing
Ive got all the motor mount, bell housing and flywheel bolts out, but we cant seem to pry the 292 apart more than half an inch. Weve tried lifting it up some with the hoist, dropping it down, pulling etc.
4 spd manual. it was in gear so i bumped it out into neutral (clutch lever was already disengaged). Still not budging. What am I missing? I was planning on leaving the tranny in. Thanks |

I believe there are bolts inside the bell housing that bolt bell housing to engine...I would check that first...

Does the back of your engine shaped like the attached image?

Did you pull the starter ? the bolts inside the bell housing go to the trans not the engine . Clutch linkage removed ? pilot bearing stuck?

Re: 292 engine removal, what am i missing
Yeah so all the bell housing bolts are off and its swparated maybe an inch so i dont see how i could have missed a bolt on the housing. The starter is off, the dust cover is off and I rotated the flywheel and got all those bolts off.
That picture does look like the back of mine I'm pretty sure. If it is a stuck pilot bearing what's the course of action to fix it? |

I sounds like you've removed the pressure plate bolts which did little more than complicate the issue. I'm assuming you have the cast iron bell housing with the side mounts. When you separated the engine from the bell housing, the entire weight of the bell and trans is rotating the trans backwards, putting the trans input shaft in a bind. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING. Let me repeat that. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING. Lift the rear of the trans slightly and see if you can loosen things up between the engine and trans. Make sure you are lifting the engine near the center of its weight so you can easily adjust its attitude to keep things from binding. |

Do you think it would be better at this point to remove the transmission first? I had one person suggest that. Didnt have a chance to work on it any but I did snag some pics of the separation... Its going to have to come out eventually so what ever method is better at this point That wire is loose just hard to tell in pic |

One idea I would try in your situation is to turn the motor over by hand and put the trans into gear and see if it binds up.

Pry it some more, the pilot bushing is stuck on the input gear of the trans

Re: 292 engine removal, what am i missing
No prying either until you correct the alignment to remove the binding.
You need the same gap top to bottom and side to side. Lift the rear of the tranny up and adjust both the height and angle of the engine. If you haven't already done so, you are dangerously close to bending the trans input shaft. |

Re: 292 engine removal, what am i missing
I broke loose the bolts on the U joints....
Next question is can I separate the drive shaft at the carrier bearing? or do I have to unbolt the carrier bearing 'U' support and pull the rest of the drive shaft through the hole all as one piece? I dug out a couple pounds of dirt, oil sludge and gravel to uncover these two nuts.... I sprayed some PB blaster on them but I doubt those are coming off.... Its in such a bad spot I cant get much to it. I see the next gen trucks they flipped that assembly upside down and made it MUCH more accessible.... Also does anyone know if the service manual has a different name for the "drive shaft"? Ive tried searching for it but I am getting everything but this drive shaft.... |

Re: 292 engine removal, what am i missing
Post a picture of the bottom of the bell housing.
You probably removed the only 1 of the 2 pieces of flywheel cover. I bet the flat one that bolts to the front of the bell housing is still installed, bending a little which is giving you some engine to trans separation. Last edited by randy500; 09-01-2019 at 03:50 PM. |

Re: 292 engine removal, what am i missing
Looked at it good and saw one bolt under some gunk which let this part of the cover come off. I thought that would just come off with motor

It will come out now, the flat one was holding it.

Re: 292 engine removal, what am i missing
THANKS! Between that and the bolt on the bottom side of each motor mount it came right out. No problem at all haha
For anyone who maybe searches this down the road besides all the super obvious stuff, there is other obvious stuff that you should check for: Three bolts on each motor mount: two on top one on the bottom (might be covered up with gunk hehe). Starter All the bell housing bolts and the TWO plates on the front side of the bell housing. The bottom one that is curved AND the flat one on top of that one. Dont have to do anything with the trans or driveshaft. |
