Interesting....does the engine burn any oil (blue smoke?) ?
Maybe it is coming from that vent tube you have going from the valve cover to the air cleaner....is the inside of the tube all oily? Are you running a PCV valve? (the tube looks more like a vent tube....could be a big block PCV, i dunno)

There is a pcv valve on the other side. I was told the tube you see is called a flame arrestor (sp). It does smoke a tiny bit when started. What is in the picture is what happend after a 120 mile trip.

I would check the inside of the flame arrestor tube then....along with the inside of the PCV valve tube....they could be sucking in oil....just a guess

Check your PCV valve to see if it working--pull it from valve cover with motor running and put you finger over the end of PCV --if working it will have a suction on it. If not you will build up pressure in crankcase from the blowby (air that is forced by piston rings when a cylinder fires) which forces oil mist up the tube into air cleaner. Where is the PCV hooked up to on carb? If hooked up right and it is working you have bad, broken or worn out compression rings. What the PCV valve does is create a suction inside the motor to pull out any blowby and run it back thru the motor. Air that it pulls out is replaced by air that is pulled thru the tube from breather. If no suction the pressure has to go somewhere hence out the tube which is the path of least resistance. Be sure and read this twice as there will be a pop quiz on it tomorrow.LOL

I replaced the pcv valve last week and the air filter when Igot the oil changed., so I know the vavle itself works. I will check to see if it is sucking in the morning (no pun intended). When I check the flame arrester, what am I checking for/

with baffeled valve covers the oil will basically hit the baffels and drip back into the head instead of getting sucked out and into the carb

I'm with cdowns. Most aftermarket valve covers do not have baffles in them. Pull the metal tube out of the valve cover grommet and look down in with a light....if you see the head, pull those suckers off, and trash them. If you see a metal plate (baffle) then you may be looking at eccessive blowby.
