Bad Speaker Location???

This has always seemed like a bad speaker location. Has anyone tried these?

when I bought my truck, the PO had already removed the stock fresh air vents and installed speakers... I replaced em with some mid quality 3 way 6" JL speakers, and then fabbed up a sealing system to keep the elements out of the backs of the speakers...

they sound OK. I'd rather have a more balanced 4 speaker setup with 2 speakers behind the seat, but I still have the factory gas tank so doing that becomes more difficult... and really, my exhaust is in general, so loud and so pleasing to my ears, I rarely use the stereo

No they go in the cab corner behind the seat. I also put in some kick panel speakers and I am having a hard time getting to be as lout as my dash speakers.

Not too bad considering. The wood and curved shape speaker enclosure helps.

I wanted some 6x9s but still have the gas tank, so this is what I did. Used existing holes except for the two front screws on the passenger side. The small speaker enclosures were from the previous owner, so I just left them there.

Because I have the wood bolted directly to the metal, I can feel the speaker vibrations through the clutch pedal. Probably going to use a rubber spacer of some sort to try and decrease that a bit. Also thinking of making some sort of enclosure for the speakers just so crap doesn't fall in the backside while driving

I have not tried those but feel you'd still need to have something up front for better stereo imaging. those champers are big, so I'd think youd need a lot of dynamat or other equivalent to knock back the hollow resonance.

i put my front components in the lower door... too boomy - and dynamat wont stick to the inside of the door due to corrosion. I've got the removable metal panel matted up and ran a strip along the lower horizontal edge of the door where you cant see it but it still isnt enough to dampen properly. I'll probably dynamat the lower portion of the door and have my guy cover the mat with carpet.... for now, i've toned down all bass from the fronts and rely upon the subs behind the seat for bass fill. It's aint bad, but it aint right yet either.

has anyone done anything to the roofs of our trucks in the name of better sound quality?

would it make much difference I wonder?

I've been considering adding dynamat to the roof and building some kind of custom covered headliner, that would eliminate the old in cab courtesy light, incorporate led lights, stereo remote sensor, sunglasses pocket, mapholder clip & whatever other good use I can make of that space...

anyway back to the speaker location topic!

I knew adding a smallish round 3way speaker would cover highs and mids, but not low frequencies...

so I added a cobbled together box for a downward facing 10" subwoofer mounted underneath my center console. which does a decent job of rounding out the sound...

When I'm rolling down the road at highway speed, in the summer, I don't bother turning it on. I've got 33" mud tires howling away, plus 2.5" dual exhaust piped in behind the stepside...

It is not show quality, but it sounds not half bad with the engine off and doors open, parked out in the bush, sitting around a campfire.

There is no optimal location in a tin can. I have to laugh at people who talk sound quality but won't put the $ in a quality speaker. A behind the seat speaker is not Ideal and as SQ competition there is no sound wanted from rear. If you buy a good quality speaker that can play at higher level, the kick panel is ok. Angle the speakers out towards head. A 6" sub in the right box will out perform 12" in a bad box. 6x9 have fallen in glory but I will say some Motorcycles running Arc Audio or Hybrid Audio 6x9 will make you fork out the $.

I built something similar to these for my ‘51 and used some cheap speakers so they were out of sight and they sound okay. I wasn’t going for high end.

Was watching Sam's Garage and they used the rear cab corner pieces that Brothers sells. He used boom mat that fit around the speaker and some of it on the metal of the truck. Looked good and said the sounds was real good. Just my 2 cents worth.

I just installed those in my 65. Sounds good for the location, just need to install some sound deadening mat or some type of insulation.

I just used magnetic tape and put them under the seat.
I also bolted 2 really small speakers under the dash.
Speakers did not move around under the seat, and Ok sound for the truck.

That's too bad. Honestly they're not that difficult to make out of 1/4" mdf which is way better for speaker enclosures than metal.

The ones I made for my '51 are 1/4" mdf that I wrapped in black backless black carpet. It makes them really hard to see, which is exactly what I was going for.
