my wife is complaining about the smell of gas from the truck in the garage. im thinking of adding a charcoal canister to the vent hose on the filler tube. any thoughts on what to use ? thanks.

If you can find one at a junk yard it may be the best bet

I made a charcoal filter for one of my other car projects. I got a steel cylinder from dollar store ($2 bicycle pump) and filled it with fish tank charcoal from Walmart. Plumbed this into the gas tank vent and then just vented the other end of the cylinder to open air. No gas smell at all, has been in there for three years now. I might have to change the charcoal sometime so the cylinder is accessible.

I will be doing the same for my 53 Chevy truck project.

I'd say a charcoal canister off a donor rig mounted up Front, possibly even behind the grill and mounted as high as you can put it. Change the powder puff in the bottom before you put it on and run the vacuum line to the carb/intake as it shows.

I'd put a Tee in the vent line so the tank still fills easily as that vent tube from the filler neck to the tank is for letting air out when you put gas in.

One more note, don't top the tank off when you fill it and don't fill it clear up before you go home and stick it in the garage. The garage might be warm enough that as the truck warms up the gas is expanding a bit and pushing fumes out. At least try it for a while and see if that cuts down on fumes.

Once you put the canister on put on a non vented cap.

Had a buddy show me how he makes them. Pretty darn easy and maybe was $30 in parts. PVC pipe with fish tank charcoal and a filter media at the bottom to keep the charcoal from falling out. The nice part is if you ever start smelling gas again, you just take apart the PVC and replace the charcoal.

Here are the parts. A trip to lowes and a pet store will get you pretty much all of it.

I know its just fuel vapors but you shouldnt use PVC with fuel, its corrosive and will fail, the failure here being just more fuel smell in the garage. you should be able to find the same parts in ABS which has a high chemical resistance.

I used a steel tube about 2" diameter and about 14" long. And cheaper than PVC.

hey nvr, your running a 327 right? what carb do you have? could you possibly have a leaky inlet needle causing the carb to overflow a bit into the throat? that could cause fuel run off through the throttle shafts and a little gas makes a big smell. it's easy to check, just go out and check about 20 mins after you return home after a run. if the throttle shaft area on the outside of the carb is wet then look into why. if you lift the hood and no gas smell it's likely not the culprit. fuel cap, small leak on the fuel lines?

thanks for the idea. the carb is a 650 afb. there's no leak at the carb or lines and its a nonvented cap. the fuel smell can be noted even 2 weeks after the truck has been driven and parked. if I plug the vent hose on the fill neck immediately after parking the truck there is no smell. so I figure a charcoal canister might be a solution.

Put a couple psi in the tank and look for leaks. No leaks do a canister.
