Intake Manifold

I am using the rtv instead of the rubber gaskets. Should there be a line of rtv on the bottom of the front and back?

I would say definitely, but the rubber seals work great!! If you cant get the rubber ones then the RTV should work.

Yup, just lay a 1/4" wide of RTV at the front and back of the block. I use Red RTV myself, but black also works pretty good

I agree as well.

Once the rubber ones pop out on you, and you have to do it all over, you never go back to using them.
I have never had a problem using sealer.
I better shut up . Now that i said that i will get leaks everwhere.

Skokie, when I told you, via PM, to use silicone instead of the rubber gaskets, I knew what I was talking about.

I sat through a GM training class when I worked at the dealer that was 8 hours of tips on stopping oil leaks.

Seems like everyone else here agrees with me too huh?

Piss on whoever told you to not use Blue Fel-Pro gaskets. That's all I've used for 15 years now.

When I offered you advice via PM, I only tell you what I KNOW to work from years of experience. You won't ever see me say "I heard" this or "someone told me" that.

When I said GM policy is to not use the rubber gaskets, to use silicone instead, I wasn't just pulling it out of my rear.

i agreed we build engines everyday and we throw away a lot of the little rubber ends. whoever told you not to use felpros do yourself a favor and dont listen to anything else they tell you because they are a moron. every race engine we put together gets fel pros as well as the street engines and we dont have leak problems

My Felpro set included the blue gaskets and the rubber ones which I used. They dont leak, and they fit nice????

Are you talking about the rubber ones that come with the Felpro set, or something else??

Yes, the Fel-Pro set comes with two sets of rubber end gaskets, the ones with the tits and the ones without.

GM did a study that determined the rubber would pooch out of place over time causing an oil leak. So, they decided to do away with the rubber end pieces and use big bead of silicone only. Warranty oil leak repairs drastically decreased after this change of policy.

Since then, saavy guys have taken the ball and run with it, throwing them away and using silicone on the Fel-Pro sets too.

If you buy a Fel-Pro intake gasket set for a later model SBC, like an early to mid 90s model, it will come with a small tube of black silicone in the box with the two side gaskets, and no end pieces. They even include a little instruction sheet in there to inform the old school guys how to apply the silicone properly.

There is nothing wrong with using the rubber end pieces, but down the road a ways, it is more likely to develop an oil leak from there.

Thanks for the information. I will have to keep an eye on it for leakage. I have learned in the past that RTV is my friend!
