'62 Granny 4... scrap, or worth selling?
I've got the original Granny 4-speed out of my Suburban... It'll never go back in it. I've been moving it from spot to spot in my garage for several years.
My gut says these aren't worth anything... but my gut has been wrong before. I'm not posting this as a For Sale ad, or even a What's It Worth... I'm posting it as a "Is there a reason I shouldn't just scrap it?"

Rebuilt about a dozen of these sm420 in the last year, I buy the cores for about $50 up here in the pacific northwest. Most are pretty good inside but usually need bearings.

Re: '62 Granny 4... scrap, or worth selling?
Probably an easy sell on the f book.
I like those when they are coupled with mid to high rear gear. I dailied a 68 for several years with 4:56 that was miserable at times. A friend had a 65 when we were teenagers he could bang shift that sucker. In a long bed it was the perfect dirt road hot rod. Always wanted to duplicate that set up. |

As I understand it, most of the Jeep series pre-85 really likes the SM 420. Might want to reach our to the jeep groups?

Re: '62 Granny 4... scrap, or worth selling?
I would try to give it away before scrapping.

I successfully sold a good one for 80 bucks (asking 100) using Craigs list. Told the guy if he changed his mind id even let him return it for a refund. Guess he liked it

Re: '62 Granny 4... scrap, or worth selling?
Had a SM465 behind my 5.3L for a couple of years. With 2.73 gears it drove fine and 1st gear was usable on the street. Towed great too. The end of that was really, it was shot. 3rd gear popout was getting worse and it was pissing oil profusely. TKO600 went in and thats a blast.
Ended up selling the driveshaft and lowering kit, guy took the 465 as well. I pretty much gave it away, because of the shape it was in. |

Re: '62 Granny 4... scrap, or worth selling?
The 420 is small enough to keep as a backup.

Re: '62 Granny 4... scrap, or worth selling?
Thanks guys.
Our state is on Lockdown, but I'll throw it up on Marketplace and see if anyone wants to run the blockades for it!
