Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
My apologies for another tank thread but I've been researching for a few weeks and can't find much info on anyone who has installed a rear mount Boyd's tank in a short wheel base '60 Apache. If anyone has done one please feel free to pop in. I am ready to place the order but am unclear on what you have to remove to install it. Spare tire carrier only or it and the rear crossmember? Also does it matter (are there any installation issues) if the filler is offset or in the center? Both are top mount and I don't care which it is as long as I don't have to modify anything.
I know this one is specific to a Boyd's tank and I appreciate any help available. They are not cheap and I don't want to screw it up. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
And the tank is made for a 60? Cause they are wider in the rear.

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
I added a Boyds tank to the rear of my LBFS . . . no issues at, and didn't remove anything. I didnt have a spare, so I cannot comment on that, but I didn't have to remove, or adjust any crossmembers. X-frame as well.

Thanks for responding. I asked Dave Boyd and he responded that I may have to but he was not sure. |

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
I just installed one in my 62. I had problems with it because on my 62 part of the frame behind the axle is boxed (from the factory) so I had a hard time bolting it in. You might not have this problem. I think I had trouble because I think I mounted it further forward than it was intended for because I was trying to line it up with a preexisting bed fill hole. I would recommend buying there install kit and make sure you get a good fuel line that will not rot if you are using California gas. I don't think you will have any modification for the filler other than cutting a hole in the bed. If you get the center mount filler than you will have to have to figure out how you are going to deal with the mettle center strip. I don't know how that will work with the offset filler.

One thing I can't tell from the site...does it mount between the frame rails or under? Every picture appears to show it below. |

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
The tabes go under the frame rails and part of the tank goes up between the rails. If you want to go though the trouble of removing the rear most cross brace you could probably slide the tank in from the rear which would allow you to raise the height to the tank a couple of inches and then reinstall the cross brace. The way that I have my filler door set up I think I could raise it up 2-3 inches. The reason I didn’t do this is because when I installed my previous tank I had a cross brace welded into the rear of the frame.

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
I don’t have any photos but when it is installed the rear most part of the tank is about level with the bottom of the rear bumper on my stepside. The front is lower. It is still visible but not unsightly. I have been contemplating painting it black to hide it a little but don’t know if it is worth it

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
I installed a similar tank from a different vendor in my '61 swb stepside. I did need to move my rear crossmember back a few inches because the tank wouldn't fit between the two crossmembers. I also had to use rivnuts for the forward bolts because the frame is boxed where the x-frame meets up.

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
Instead of the Boyd tank, Did this 20 yrs ago. On mine 62 panel, I think the frame is the same on swb pickups. I found that a 91-96 Caprice wagon tank fits. it's a poly tank side fill, don't know about the Caprice sedans, maybe they fill from the back. spare tire mount removed only, the rest works as is. made up some cross pieces to mount the straps.

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
How did you run the filler. I guess that would be much different on a panel.

Re: Boyd's Tank in a '60 SWB Fleetside
Filler on the panel was in just the right spot. Caprice tank is 22 gallons.... mounting rear caprice straps... 2 each 1.5" angles top and bottom of frame. looks like I reused old straps across the top to keep in place....I can post more photos if needed.
