My auto repair training comes from 40 something years of owning crap, and to cheap to pay someone else to fix it

Ummmm, I'm 15. Bought my truck at 14 with my own hard earned money. Now i'm in the middle of a frame-off restoration.

I have pretty much taught myself everything I know about mechanical stuff. I have also learned a bunch on this board and in the chat room, thanks to Josh and Slowformula (among others).

Here's what I built at 14 (friend driving)

Here's the 71 i'm workin on now.

Age

I am 57 years old.
Bought my truck new in 1970
In1971 I converted it to 5 lug & disk brakes & new bumper & grille
In 1976 I bought a new 4X4 frame & converted the truck to a 4X4
A couple years after thet I put a 427 in it & AC & tilt steering.
Started life as a CST 350 auto & ended up as a 427 4X4 4spd.
Super Cheyene interior With AC, tilt, cruise, AM/FM, short bed stepside.
I have Factory buckets & console to put in it next.
It's served me well for the last 34 years.

Born in '49, got the '72 in '77, rebuilt engine & trans and new paint in '92. In telephone work since age 18, first inside (13 years), but much happier outside as cable splicer/lineman.

Hey midyear - which midyear? I've owned a '65 roadster 327/365 and a '66 air coupe 327/350 - sure wish I still had 'em!

I guess I am the old man of this group. I just turned 60 last month. But I don't feel old, probably because I have to many things I still want to do to my 68 pickup and my 88 Corvette. I have been working on Chevys for about 45 years (as a necessity during my younger years, but now it is a hobby). Otherwise I am a retired electronics engineer.
I am not planning on leaving this world soon, but when I do they will have to pry me out of either my pickup or the Corvette.!!!!!
Keep on truckin!!!!!

You have an L-88? Do you have pics? I didn't think they really existed, I've never seen one in real life.

I'm 39, I'm getting old. It's nice to see you teenagers in this fine hobby.

I am one of the OTA's.....(Older Than Average) - 47...Amatuer Mechanic all the way...Hit and miss...with all my misses I gotta hit it someday. Before I went into the Air Force I was did apprentice in an autobody shop for about 2 years. Haven't used it much in the last 15 years till I got the truck last year. Time to practice the hitting and missing again.

I'm 26, recently out of U.S.M.C. I was a network administartor there. Currently looking for a career. I learned how to work on my vehicles the old fashion way. I had to go out an hour before I left for work and make sure it ran, because if it didn't I had an hour to make it work!! Sure makes you figure things out quick!!!

30 here.

Spent some years as mechanic for GM dealership and at independent shops. Finally ended up a mechanic for the post office.

Spent two years in college getting Airframe and Powerplant licenses to fix airplanes. Hated it, went back to cars.

Quit all of that two years ago to go to fire academy. Got a great job in a rich little city. Went to paramedic school last year. Now I'm Firefighter/ Paramedic full time. Own a landscaping business too. Still mechanic in the spare time left over from the two jobs.

I'm 15. I got my truck last april and have been slowly earning and spending money on it. So far i probably have about $1500 into it i earned berry picking and helping friends of the family. I have a bunch of stuff i want to do to my truck including the intake/carb. and the patch panels and get the interior sorted out that i want to have done by my birthday in Feb. This board is awesome, it's helped me so much to find parts and learn abou these trucks, thanks guys

I fall in the latter part of the 35-40 group at 39

My mechanical background is a bit varied
For about 18 years I did general aviation aircraft maintenance on every thing form gliders and piper cubs to king airs and citations. Throw in a couple of years of heavy equipment maintenance on over the road trucks to 100ton hydraulic cranes. And the past couple of years I have been doing field service on water and wastewater treatment systems. And most of my hobbies have contributed also with rebuilding dirt and street bikes, building mini-modified pulling tractors, and now my truck.
