Re: door glass conversion
it's a 3 part you tube. some mods are required because of the shape of the door and glass. here is part one.

Re: door glass conversion
yep, I'm sticking with the vent windows because I can make those seal most likely and because I want power windows that work without falling out of the tracks etc. besides, I wanna drive the truck before too much longer so the vents will go back in and a power window system for the moveable glass. I can always change my mind once it's driving.

Does the conversion work with Altman latches?

Re: door glass conversion
Your thread ended so I'm not sure if you ever went ahead with the conversion but Brothers just posted a how to video and it looks pretty easy. I'm thinking of doing it on my 59. Anyone else use Brothers one piece glass conversion yet?

Re: door glass conversion
Ogre used the brothers kit, it fits good enough but falls out of the track in the down position if you drive it. I'd modify black diesel's install by adding the track on the bottom. I did electric windows using 07 dodge Dakota regulators. It was cheap, like free cheap

Re: door glass conversion
I was sad to see wind windows go on modern cars. I guess they wanted you to buy A/C. I think one of the coolest things on my 53 is the little visors over the vent windows.

Re: door glass conversion
Free is a very good price. I saw on one of the videos that your supposed to not cut the channel at all and just leave the piece towards the front to help keep it on track. How did yours seal up? No whistling sound while driving?

Do you have Altman latches on yours? Does it work with them?

Re: door glass conversion
My wing windows were totally shot, it would have been $600 plus to replace them. Any scissors type window regulator can be adapted with the right tenacity. Just go for it, you can not fail, you might have to start over, that is not failure until the 3rd try

Re: door glass conversion
i would talk to /www.nu-relics.com about your conversion. i havent talked to them about my 55 as yet, but they helped me eliminate the wind wings in my 35 chevy. They knew exactly how to modify my doors and provided the extended window bottom rails and templates for placing the mechanisms mounting in my door panels. they use new GM window motors and new hardware, and bushings in what appears to be new steel mechanisms great people to deal with as well. good luck.

Re: door glass conversion
I used the brother one piece window kit and it worked wonderfully and was very easy to install. I dont have any issue of the window falling out of the track either , not sure if it will work with altman latches.
The brothers kits may seem difficult but if you watch their video on their you tube change and just pause as you go along , you should be fine |

I heard brothers fixed some of the issues with these kits a couple years ago, just wondering if they are truly better now. |

Re: door glass conversion
Here is the problem with the 1 piece glass.
both these lines are parallel to each other, if you add to the frame where the arrow is it would work much better, as the glass goes down it has to move toward the front of the truck so modifying the felt channel parallel to the other would take care of the problem. EDIT--Sounds easy but not to bad for a fabricator, I may go back and modify my modify. Last edited by MD2020; 09-18-2021 at 04:13 PM. |

Re: door glass conversion
here is some pic, the brothers kits is the way to go, it come with everything and their videos help tremendously.
Glass is thinner theres no doubt against that but not sure of the pros and cons of that. Im very happy with install and the look. where Im pointing there is a overlap in the metal and the brother video says to cut that seam (overlap) and hammer it as smooth as possible , it does bind the window up a bit teherewhen rolling it up, I would recommend taking the Makita 4" grinder to it and grind it smooth that way there no binding and the window can roll up smooth. Beside that its perfect |

Re: door glass conversion
Malibloc—- did you have to modify the original track position, or add a front channel support. How does it seal when in up position? Any wind noise?
I’ve been going back and forth about 1 piece or ordering all new original glass, the of glass is roughly 1000$ where as the kit is 400. |

Re: door glass conversion
very little to no modification , there is a small bracket you cut off, and the felt window channel acts as a up and down guide. Be sure to grind down the overlap in the front portion of each door .
You have the ability to move the glass front and back and Im confident my window is in the center position to fit frame and I do not have any wind noise, lets just say if almost impossible to shut doors with window up, if your window is down you can feel the wind blast thru the open window! Im very happy with the conversion, brothers truck has the best kit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIjzwUBnsqs |
