steering pinion arm nut
I just received my power steering box and I noticed that it didn't come with a pinion arm nut, so I called and they told me to use my old nut. My old nut was on my manual steering box and is not the same size. So, I started to look for another one for this application and no one knows the size or thread of the nut. the old one I think was 7/8x14 but it won't start on my out put shaft. Did anyone else have this problem? If you had to purchase a pinion shaft nut, what size was it and where did you get it? Thanks for the help!

We don't know your exact application but assuming the truck in your profile picture is the one you're working on, RockAuto sells them for $3.90. I just searched for a 1972 C10 with a 350 and under the Steering section -> Steering Gear Nut

Well, information on steering box pitman arm nut was finally answered today. After searching the internet for hours last night I couldn't find anything. This morning I went to a friends and took the nut off of his power steering gear box and compared it to the one I had. The nuts are the same for both power and manual steering. The problem turned out to be that the threads on my newly purchased box were boogered up and the nut off the p/s box didn't work either. So, I took box back to NAPA and will purchase new box again tomorrow, hopefully with better results.. thanks for walking through this with me.
Now, my concerns are, will the p/s hoses work with my 1983 p/s pump and connect with my 1968 p/s gear box. Is there a difference in fittings between these years and will they work together??? thanks for all the useful information! |

The 83 pump and hoses should use an o-ring to seal. The 68 box uses a tapered seat to seal.
You have 2 choices; Swap out your 68 box for an 83 box. Use 83 hoses. Swap the pressure fitting off the back of the pump to the earlier style tapered seat. Use the 68 hoses and box.

Since the steering box is new and just installed, what does it take to swap out pressure fittings off back of pump? Is it just a simple screw off and then screw on new (old) fittings? Thanks for the information...
