engine ID

It must be a genaric rebuild in the 1968 c30 I just brought home. I have what looks like a chevy 350 with a 4 speed and trying to get engine to turn over but starter is bad I think. The starter bolts to bell housing not up to motor. WHAT is it.

4 speed manual 67 72 starter if its stick they bolt to the bell housing
As for the motor you need to tell us the casting number
Here is a youtube clip showing you where to look up your casting number

Re: engine ID

I do not know Block Vin number stuff Does any part of that front stamping match your vin ?

The main numbers most of us look at are the casting numbers from the back of the block clean the area where the block casting numbers are use you camera or phone to take pictures of the number may take several tries

Re: engine ID

Some sources aren't quite the same on the suffix codes.

http://www.gregwapling.com/hotrod/mo...s-tbt-tjs.html

That coming from this page. http://www.gregwapling.com/hotrod/mo...8-engines.html

Nasty Z 28 is most guys go to spot for checking and it has the same as the Greg Wapling site meaning that Wapling probably used their info. https://nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/...s-suffix-7.php

The V should mean that the engine came from the Flint Michigan plant.

Re: engine ID

well this is confusing, the TXB on the front of the motor means its a 1975 350 the numbers on the left side rear of block(3970010) means it is a 1968 327. I guess I won't know till I remove the heads.

3970010 or "010" blocks were '69 - '79 350 2 & 4 bolt main.

That lines up with your "TXB" suffix code info: '75 350.

Its guessing but I'd say it likely hasn't been rebuilt (bored out) since the VIN and suffix code are still readable. Lots of shops will machine the deck surface to "0" which clears the numbers off the VIN pad.

Best way to tell if its 4-bolt main is to drop the pan and look.

Re: engine ID

Just noticed you're from Burlington, not too far south of me.

My suffix code book breaks down the code as:
V= Flint, Michigan
0410= April 10
TXB:
'75 350 160 hp 4BBL carb, manual trans, Truck
'76 & '77 350 165 hp 4BBL carb, TH350 trans, Truck

3970010 casting lines up with it being a 350 as was stated. When I had my 350 rebuilt the shop asked if I wanted it decked but I declined in order to keep the original stampings.

FWIW it was also used on big blocks
TXB = '89 454 230 hp Manual trans, TBI, Truck

Yes.

I believe this information is from Nastyz28 -correct???

This shows us that you need more than just the casting number to identify an engine block.

3970010 could be a 327, 302-call me if you have one , or most likely a 350. Most likely because it was used on 350's for 10 years.

casting number + suffix code will give you the correct displacement, year(s) and application (generally)

the numbers preceding the suffix code are a portion of the vehicle's VIN

Those are how you tell if the block is "numbers matching" to your truck / car. A numbers matching engine will have a portion of the truck's VIN stamped on the VIN pad preceding the suffix code, and those numbers will be the same as that portion of the VIN on the door, cab or SPID.
