72 Chevy 4x4 auto 400 turbo
Can anyone help? I have a 72 Chevy 4x4 and want to install a 400 turbo. Some have said I have to move the cross member? Just would like to know what all is involved to install a 400 turbo in a 72 4x4. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: 72 Chevy 4x4 auto 400 turbo
I believe there are differences in the transfer case so the TH400 doesn't bolt directly to a NP205 that came with a TH350 in front of it.

Re: 72 Chevy 4x4 auto 400 turbo
The spline count on the output shaft is different on the TH400. You will need a different input gear on the NP205. You will have to move the cross member back. You will need to shorten the rear driveshaft and lengthen the front shaft.
This gets expensive and you need to really have a need/want to go through with this IMO>

Re: 72 Chevy 4x4 auto 400 turbo
If you don’t have a turbo 400 or late style sm465 np205 you’ll have to machine the transfer case to accept the turbo 400 input bearing.

I had no idea there was that much involved to make the 400 work. I would be better off money wise to use a th350 it sounds like.

Re: 72 Chevy 4x4 auto 400 turbo
I'd build a good turbo 350 and skip the headache. Doesn't a turbo 400 have a solenoid or switch that you have to run off the carburetor also.

Yes , a kickdown switch. The '72 would be located on the accelerator pedal bracket, inside the cab. LockDoc
